How much did you pay for your mattress?

I’m looking to buy a new mattress and trying to get a sense of what is reasonable.

I’m 6’1" 260lbs. My current mattress is a firm memory foam mattress I bought from Big Lots about 6 years ago. $600ish as I recall. At the time I didn’t have much money to get into more expensive options. It was fine for most that time. Now it has permanent indentations where I lay, it’s hurting my back and needs to go.

I’m in a much different economic position now, if dropping three grand on a mattress is the way to go I have no trouble doing so. I’m also not opposed to replacing cheaper mattresses more frequently.

My shopping thus far was at Jordon’s Furniture, a regional chain I’ve had really goo experiences with. The two options I tried and liked one was a store brand memory foam mattress they sell for $1100. The other was a Tempur-Pedic that retailed for $2600. It was more comfortable than the $1100 but the $1100 would already be an improvement over what I have had, so I’m kinda torn. Both have similar life expediencies.

What do you got? What did you spend? Would you make a different choice if you had to buy again?

Tempur-Pedic in California King. If we could get someone to do the custom headboard we’d use it sideways to accommodate all the animals.

Current mattress cost over 2k.

I also bought a $160 foam mattress topper (4" thick) that I put on top of a 15 year old spring mattress and that is almost as good as the 2k mattress.

I ended up getting a California King Serta Perfect Sleeper (this one, actually), and I’m very happy with my purchase nearly 2 years later. It’s easily the second most comfortable spring mattress I’ve ever slept on.

I’m 6’4", so the added length is amazing (I don’t think I had ever slept fully on a bed in my adult lifetime until I got this in 2016) and it’s held up remarkably so far. Sleeps two comfortably when needed; one person can get out of bed without disturbing the other at all, the mattress is so well-made (for instance).

About $2K on a Tempur-Pedic with the base platform. That was about 14 years ago and it’s still holding up just fine. Since most mattresses have about a 5-6 year lifespan, I think it was a good buy.

A little over $2000 from what I remember on our queen sized Tempur-Pedic Cloud. That was seven years ago. I’d do it again. The plan is to upgrade eventually to a King of the same brand. It reduced my back pain. It’s very quiet.

I also have the Tempur-Pedic pillow which was maybe $200 and SO worth it. I think I feel more strongly about the pillow.

But I wouldn’t want to switch mattresses either. I am curious about Casper.

I paid more for my pillows than I paid for my mattress. Come to think of it, I think I paid more for my sheets than I paid for my mattress.

Green tea memory queen-sized foam mattress, $129. It’s great. No idea how it will wear but my son’s twin mattress, same brand, is doing well after two years.

My husband getting up in the middle of the night? No disturbance. My dog jumping on the bed? No disturbance, at least not on the mattress side. (He does tend to hog the covers.)

Mattress, box springs and frame set me back about $900 for a fancier-brand queen; I paid a little extra for a split box. A headboard we already had and I probably didn’t need another frame but they wouldn’t discount it any so I took it.

We got a Sleep Number (king size) about 6 or 8 years ago. It’s one of those things that people either love or detest, and I love it.

I like a softer mattress than my husband does, in general, but sometimes if my back is bothering me or I have wicked head cold and need to sleep a bit more propped up I can adjust the firmness temporarily. Don’t regret that chunk o’ change at all.

$475 for a Tuft & Needle foam mattress. Does not sleep hot or have the ‘trapped’ sensation of memory foam. It is fairly firm and comfortable. Shows no sign of wear, sagging or indentation after a year of use.

Somehow I have never bought a mattress. I’ve had 2 main beds, first bed mattress was a gift and second bed and mattress was a hand-me-down.

I recently bought a Sealy “bed in a box” memory foam mattress. It was around $1000 for a queen, came in the mail, and is awesome. It also has some sort of cooling gel technology, which is a godsend for the Lady of the House who tends to sleep very hot.

Simmons Beautyrest Comforpedic IQ 200, Luxury Plush, King

We tested a host of mattresses in different stores, and this one was by far the best one we tried. It wasn’t the most expensive we tried out, but it was the absolute most comfortable.
3 years later it is still a fabulous mattress and I hope it will continue to be for a long time to come.

ETA $4100

$500 about a year and half ago. It’s quite comfortable memory foam, but I wish we had bought one of those beds with a remote control to elevate one side or the other. I snore sometimes, and feel that if my husband had a way to change my position with the push of a button he would probably sleep better on nights when I’m really going at it.

Full size Live & Sleep Resort Elite, 3-layer foam/gel ; $300 on Amazon.

We spent just under $500 for a $700 mattress that was on sale, because it had been redesigned. It’s a double, which we have had for four years with two adults, 150lbs, and 240lbs (DH is 6’2) sleeping on it, and it has not lost it’s shape or bouyancy.

It has no “extras” though. It was not stain resistant, and did not have individually wrapped springs, or a foam top (we bought a two inch one, plus a fabric stain resistant covering).

It is super-comfortable. It does not have firmness adjustments, and it isn’t heated-- totally no frills.

However, as far as “no frills” goes, it’s top of the line no frills. Everything we looked at the was more expensive had some kind of technology, and was 150% more, at the very least. Most were upwards of $1000.

The stain-resistant wrapper can be cleaned with generic cleanser (like generic 409) and a rag, or cleaning wipes, we do this once every couple of months (we don’t sleep directly on it-- it’s under the foam topper, a mattress pad, and a fitted sheet). The foam topper is in a zippered sheet fabric case that gets washed once every other sheet change (ie, every other week).

I scoff at the commercials that say our mattress will double in weight from dead skin, dust and mites every eight years. I intend to wear out this mattress. As soon as it has saggy spots, that’s when it’s time to buy a new one.

We turn this one over and around a lot, to wear it evenly.

Our last mattress was bought very cheaply because we had some water damage to the previous one, and had to get one ASAP, and bought cheap. Bad. We had a $125 mattress that had a big saggy spot in the middle within 18 months.

If your want the frills, the electronics, the ones the become more of less firm at the touch of a button, or can be raised and lowered, and won’t really be happy without one, pay for it. But if you don’t want that, buy the best mattress that doesn’t have that stuff. It will probably be between $500-700 for a double-queen sized. Probably a little more for a king-sized or extra-long.

Back in 2014 I really liked a bed that was in the hotel I stayed in for a conference - it was the first hotel mattress I’ve ever slept on that was really comfortable. At first I was pleased to discover you could buy the bed from the hotel’s website…until it came back at over $1,500 before you even added a frame :frowning: I did some research and found that a lot of people swore that this mattress was very similar, and ended up paying a bit shy of $300 for it. With an extra high frame and a Big One gel topper from Kohl’s, it’s pretty darn comfortable.

About $900 canadian for a queen size and foundation (tax included,) from a little place down the road. They had most of the mattresses hung up on racks to save space, so I tried a few of the “floor models” first, the salesman asked me what I’d liked and didn’t like, and then he pulled down something for the racks for me to try, which I loved and bought.

No complaints after nearly a year.

I have this mattress, bought through Amazon. I like a very squashy mattress, and this is the squashiest. https://www.dreamfoambedding.com/product/ultimate-dreams-13-gel-memory-foam-mattress/

Closing on four years and it’s still the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever tried.

Roughly $600 for a queen Serta Perfect Sleeper at a local chain. They were having their semiannual sale. Ordinarily I think the style we got goes for roughly $800. They threw in the mattress pad and delivery for free.

We had a pillow top queen before that. My husband hated it with a passion. He’s a big guy, though, so he could sleep on a granite slab and be comfortable. I like mine a bit softer than that. Turned out that the pillow top caused more back issues with both of us than we’d realized. At the time we couldn’t afford a new mattress so we put the pillow top in the spare bedroom and cribbed together a mattress from an old futon, wood slats, and a 4" memory foam topper. We both still had issues but at least neither of us sunk down as much as we did with the pillow top.
