When we changed over to the Euro (go on england you know you want to) the conversion rate was roughly 1 euro =£1.27
About 3 months after the changeover, the police recovered a large amount of drugs they estimated its value at 1.27 million euro.
So far in Vancouver we’ve had three drug busts that we’ve bothered to cover, even briefly. Two pot, one cocaine.
Police say the 24 kilograms of cocaine were worth $2,000,000. That works out to more than $80,000 per kilo, or about $83/gram.
One pot bust involved 500 plants-- also allegedly worth $2,000,000, or $4000/plant. I have no idea how much bud can be harvested per plant, but I know that joints sell on the street for $5, which would mean you need about 800 grams per plant. That’s a pound and a half for you imperialist types.
The problem with police estimates is that they are not only doing handy’s method of calculation where every stage is keystoned from supplier to consumer, but they are also overweighting the product sometimes. When they bust a pot grower, the polite and honest agents don’t just weigh what could get you high (the leaves and bud). They also tend to include in the weight the stem, roots and dirt that is still held in the roots after they pull it out of the ground. So a guy caught growing for personal use say, 10 plants, each plant will yield 6 ozs. (high-end average cited from seed companies for indoor plants) of smokable pot…so just under 4 pounds…but when they weigh it with roots and dirt, it is now closer to 20. MY GOD! This man had $160,000 of pot growing in his closet!
As for street prices, it’s all economics- supply and demand dictates for each area and level of quality. Hydroponic pot here in Prague is going for about $13 a gram ($360/oz)…but it is so strong that I use about 1 gram a month (yes, 1 gram - I don’t smoke a lot when I do indulge). Twice a year I buy 6 grams from a friend who grows it, thus circumventing all of those pesky terrorists! :rolleyes: I only worry about my health since pot is 4 times as un-healthy as tobacco- heck, to do the damage I do to my lungs, I’d have to smoke one whole cigarette every week! :rolleyes: :rolleyes:
Interestingly, back when drugs were legal here in the CZ, pot was mostly free. There were growers who showed up at parties and started rolling joints for everyone. If you had friends in that group, you just asked them for some and they would give you a margarine tub full of it. It wasn’t hydroponic, but it was generally good quality smoke. I never paid for pot until they made it illegal. I always thought that that would make a good economics thesis paper for some grad student…
