Obviously users tolerances vary, but when talking about pot, cocaine, heroin, Oxycontin, meth, Ecstasy etc., how much does a typical dose required to get high cost?
Well, I don’t smoke anymore but pot for me was cheaper than beer. Five bucks would have me in international airspace.
It’ll only cost you… your soul!!
Ohhhh, it’s been a while lesse
Oxycontin, well I think vicodin and oxycodone go for about $5 per pill.
X IIRC was about $20-$25
Acid was usually $5/hit.
Pot varies wildly. The good stuff was usually about $40 for an eighth of an ounce, but that would go a long way.
Cocaine IIRC was about $60-$90 per gram, if you were only a moderate user, that would last several days, but if you wanted to have fun (for a little while) it was easy to go through it all in a few hours with a friend.
ETA regarding pills. This is hugely dependent from person to person. I have friends that take A pill and are fine. OTOH for me and my pill taking buddy in college our usual dose was 5 Tylenol 3s or 5 vicodins or 2 or 3 Percocets. But that would get you REALLY* high. But it didn’t cost us anything. Both of our parents had rotator cuff surgery so we just took the pills from them.
*REALLY
My experience with illicit drugs is a bit out of date and it’s also not extensive. I can’t speak for actual addicts with high tolerances, but from a recreational viewpoint, I’d say alcohol is among the most expensive.
Having said that, I’d also point out that alcohol is different to most other drugs in that the actual ingestion of the stuff is a big part of the fun. Coughing over a bong isn’t pleasant, but sipping a single malt scotch is. So in a way, you get two layers of fun for alcohol’s expense. The drugs, on the other hand, only give you the buzz - and ingestion is a chore.
My fun-loving friends tell me that when priced in terms of “buzz-hours”, most street drugs are roughly comparable to the price of premium-brand alcohol. Obviously there is some wide variation in potency, purity, authenticity, and individual sensitivity. Also, that rule of thumb slightly overestimates the cost of bulk-purchased marijuana (like half-ounce or larger) or authentic LSD.
:dubious:
I beg to differ. Smoking good herb can (when legal or in the past, hi mods) be pleasant in much the same way drinking a good beer is. There are plenty of connoisseurs out there, looking for quality in taste, smell, and appearance, in addition to the fundamental quality of getting you high. For some other drugs, sure, that statement is likely true, but not for high-quality smoke.
As far as prices go, I’d say pot would be $5 for say, a joint of regular grade marijuana (“schwag”), but works out to about $7 for 1/2 gram of higher grade (“kind”). Both amounts are about what 1-2 people would use in one sitting, on average.
Cocaine costs about $50/gram around here, which would last most people a single night, due to the nature of cocaine being that it mostly just makes you want to do more, after a certain point. It’s hard to say what one “line” would cost, because the amount in each line varies widely due to personal preference.
Ecstasy is generally $20-30, and Acid ranges from $5-10. I think it tends to run right around $7 here. Some people may take more than one hit of each, though, or combine the two.
Mushrooms tend to be between $25 and $50 for an optimal amount, but I’ve seen $13 worth take one to the moon as well.
I’m happy to say that I have no idea how much heroin, crack, and most pills cost.
Or how much the product has been cut.
Here is the UK 2005 Drugs Price Guide kindly prepared by The Observer from research carried out by the Independent Drugs Monitoring Unit. The cost of cocaine varies from £39 ($78) to £47 per gram with a general downward trend going under £40.
For 2008, this story describes the discovery of a 25kg packet of cocaine worth over £1million, which suggests that prices are holding up quite well at £40 plus per gram despite the 2005 indications of a dip.
I got some cocaine for Christmas many years ago. I enjoyed it so much I decided I’d better not take any more of the stuff ever again.
I agree with this. I have vacationed in Amsterdam and visited a few Coffee Shops, which have the same feel as a local pub except that instead of drinking, everyone is smoking pot. Being from the good ole US of A, I had smoked my share of dope in college but never had a clue there were so many varieties. When we went into this coffee shop, the ‘bartender’ pulled out this box separated into sections…kind of like a tackle box…except it was full of different types of pot. Then he went thru the options, describing the bouquet of this one, the aroma of that one, the various flavors and last but not least, the type of high each one would give you. It was hilarious.
Sitting in a bathroom with 6 people getting high, getting high watching a movie, driving around getting high etc are some of the best memories of my college years. It’s just as fun to get there as it is to be there. Now, there is a difference between taking giant bong hits of crappy weed and smoking a nice glass pipe full of high quality kind buds/skunk/sticky icky/ cryptocronica/whatever you want to call it this week.
[Katt Williams]It’s called Death? You mean I’m gonna hit this and DIE, that don’t even sound attractive.[/KW]
Seems like tobacco would be about the cheapest* of these mood-altering, addictive drugs. Probably because it’s legal, which keeps the price down. (My grandparents mentioned how alcoholic beverages were quite a bit more expensive during Prohibition, and how they quickly came down in price afterwards.)
- Not counting the eventual cost of treating the cancer that tobacco will give you.
I believe heroin costs about $10 per 100 mg bag. One bag may get a nontolerant user high two or three times. Addicts may go through a bundle (a gram) per day. This is all according to stuff I’ve read. It varies to some degree on your method of administration too.
Off topic, but might be of interest. I’ve been suffering from acute pain for nearly a year. While trying different procedures (probably will have surgery soon), my doc has had me on some opiates. I started with Vicodin, which required too many a day to relieve the pain, so switched to Oxycontin. He wants me to get on extended-release morphine, so am having one hell of a time trying to taper off the Oxy. Really nasty withdrawal symptoms, but working on it. Gradually down from five a day to four, and now three. Lottsa fun.
Although they help with the pain for some hours, when getting near time for the next, it comes back with a vengeance. What surprised me is how much i hate the damned stuff. It makes me feel horrible, soaking sweats, chills, aching muscles, feel miserable all the time. What I definitely did not have was a high or any sort of euphoria.
So, I began to wonder why the hell anybody would take the stuff for recreational purposes, so asked my doc. He told me something interesting (that I verified online). If these narcotics are used to control pain, they seldom produce any high. OTOH, if used when there is no pain, then they let the user get high. Which is why people takingthem for pain get addicted when it is cured by a procedure or surgery. Once the pain is gone, they begin to like it, which is why so many people have trouble with these meds.
In my case, my insurance pays for the generic kind and my co-payment is only $5 for 90 days. Don’t contact me for any left-overs.
Surely you realize that oxycodone and morphine are both opioids, and that you’re physically dependent on opioids in general, not any particular one. In other words, you could substitute morphine for the oxycodone and never suffer withdrawls. Of course it isn’t good to be physically dependent anyway, but it seems like you’re suffering through withdrawls just so you can become dependent again. It’s like an alcoholic swearing off whiskey but drinking vodka instead.
I’ve been told that heroin is $20 “a bag.” I have no idea how much is in a bag, but apparently it’s a standard measurement amongst users and every heroin user will know exactly how much you mean when you use that phrase. The guy who told me this said that a user with no tolerance could stay high all day on one bag.
Crack, contrary to what you hear on the news, is something I’ve found to be ridiculously expensive. I’ve done it a few times before (never more than one time in a month) and I remember that three of us had a difficult time making $120 worth of the stuff last two hours.
As far as pills go, you can expect to pay a max of $1 per milligram for oxycodone-containing pills (Percocet, Oxycontin). Oxycontin comes in doses of 20, 40, 60, and 80mg., I believe. Someone with no tolerance will get knocked on his ass by a 20.
For benzos… geez, it’s been a while, but I used to pay $5 for 2mg Xanax bars. That’s the highest strength Xanax pill prescribed. One of them is probably overkill for someone without tolerance. This was in Louisiana, eight hours away from Mexico, where it’s absurdly easy to get prescription drugs without a prescription, so the prices probably get higher the farther north you get.
Methampetamine costs $20 for enough to keep me awake for two or three days. Or at least that’s what it was three years ago when I tried it a few times. Since then, I haven’t used it or known anyone who has, so that price might be out of date.
In college (in Florida), the going rate for “cryp” (i.e. good stuff) was $50 for an eighth. This was the stuff you smoked out of a bong or a pipe, and was all crystally with red hairs. “Regs” (i.e. “regulars”, or shwag) was $25 for a quarter. This was the stuff you rolled into joints, and had to pick stems and seeds out of.
I’m not so sure I agree. I was in the E/R last summer with excruciating abdominal pain, rigged up to an IV. Tordol didn’t do the trick, so the doc shot me up with… something. I don’t know what, but I remember hearing him say the words “opioid narcotic.” Whatever it was, it did the trick and then some. Not only was my pain gone, but I felt all “floaty,” really at peace, and a kind of loving feeling that I can’t really describe in words. And I felt like a million bucks, too. If this is what users mean when they describe a “high” from opiates, then I sure as hell was high. It was an experience that I would pay to have again, if it was possible to do legally and without any risk of addiction (both of which are impossible, so I haven’t chased that high since then).
As a present? That must have been quite a Christmas.
Looking at the prices mentioned I can safely say that drugs here are MUCH cheaper. Maybe about 50% cheaper for Ecstacy, Weed and Cocaine. Don’t know the prices of other drugs.
I haven’t done any illegal drugs for over a year, but when I was in the ‘scene’ it cost:
[ul]
[li]E - 5-7 pounds per pill[/li][li]Coke - 50-50 pounds per gram[/li][li]Hash is about 80gbp for a 1/8th ounce brick[/li][/ul]
A pill would keep me going for 4 hours or so, and cocaine would keep me high for about an hour per line and give 10 lines or go per gram.
Any of those are cheaper than a night out drinking in a club for me and certainly getting drunk for me, although I rarely do that anymore either. Guess I am finally getting a bit old.
This is my experience, too. The first time I ever had morphine, I was definitely in pain; a lot of pain (kidney stone). But within 10 minutes after having the morphine put in my IV, I can recall thinking “I can see how people can get hooked on this”. The interesting thing for me is, while the morphine did indeed relieve some of the pain, it didn’t relieve it all. It just made me not give a damn about it.
