How much do jeans cost?

I don’t like shopping. I don’t like going. I don’t like hunting down the one thing in the store that I like and sort of fits. And I avoid it until it’s almost absolutely necessary.

Yesterday was one of those almost absolutely necessary days, and I went to the department store to try on jeans. Usually, I buy the same brand and style. They mostly fit, and they’re cheap, but I have to go out of my way to get them. So I thought I’d see what they had at a more convenient department store. The only two pairs that came close to fitting were $158 and $168. And they needed $30 of alterations (needed. I couldn’t wear them unaltered), so basically, these were $200 jeans.

I was shocked. I’m still shocked. But then, of course, if you’d told me 2 years ago that I’d be happy to find gas for only $3.95, I would have been shocked, too. So maybe, that’s what jeans cost these days. But I don’t know. So - people who spend more time in stores, what’s the going rate?

I’m a guy. I pay around $25 to $35 a pair. My gf regularly pays $200 or more for hers.
But, if you watch us walking away, you see that she is getting her monies worth, and I am getting what I paid for.

Holy crap! If I was gonna pay that much for jeans, I’d expect Johnny Depp to help me put them on.

I’ve bought jeans that fit at K-Mart for $20, and from Land’s End for about $30. Sometimes I buy Levis at J.C. Penney for $30 or $35. The most I’ve ever paid was $50 for Tommy Hilfiger jeans. My husband buys his at Dollar General and won’t pay more than $10.

We’re not real label-conscious around here.

Well at a place like Kohls, Mervins, T.J Max, and such you can find $20-40 dollar jeans. I mean we’re not all out there buying Lucky’s for $150 a pop. Levis can run about 50 bucks, wranglers or other no-names can go around 40…

You don’t have to mention your restrictions but it seems you are tending towards the really expensive ones. No?

after recovering from faint

Five to seven bucks at Goodwill, all styles, sizes, and colors you can imagine and some you can’t.

New, I’d be willing to pay between thirty and fifty dollars.

(female)

Male here, I’m at the moment wearing Levi Silvertabs that I paid 20 bucks for, but my favorites are from American Eagle that run about 50.

I usually pay $30-$50, and I think the most I’ve ever paid is ~$65 at Gap. Lately I’ve been shopping at Kohls, I don’t think they even sell a pair that costs over $60.

What kind of alterations did they need? I didn’t even know you could alter jeans, outside of hemming, and I’m surprised if that were $30. (But again, $4 gas and all that).

What store did you go to?? That is NOT how much normal jeans cost. For example, at JCPenney, Levi’s are priced at $29-$36. At Kohl’s, Levi’s are only $29, and at Macy’s they are also on sale for $29. Even Target or Wal-Mart sells decent jeans, or you could try Old Navy, which has decent, well-priced jeans. I can’t imagine what store you went to, that is really really pricey - only “designer” jeans at high-end department stores are going to cost that much.

You must shop at some really high-end department stores. Setting aside Wal-Mart and their $12 jeans…At lower-end department stores like Kohls, Sears, and JC Penneys, jeans cost between $15-20 and $40-50. If you go to Bergners, a little further up the scale, expect to pay $30 to $60-70. At the top of the scale for Hickory Point Mall–Von Maur’s–the most expensive jeans are generally around $60 to $110, with an average price of $80.

So where were you shopping?

Based on the “swap the dollar sign for a pound sign” retail rule of thumb (notwithstanding the fact that £1 = $2, more or less), that sounds about right. A pair of high-street brand jeans (Next, Gap) is about £35-£50 over here. You can get them for less, too, in M&S or somewhere, but a “designer” brand will likely be £150. FWIW I’ve never paid more than £90 for a pair.

Here at the outlet store in Las Vegas, you can get Levi’s for about $45 or so, depending on the style and model number.

I just had a friend call from Germany and he went out and bought regular Levi’s three weeks ago. He paid 100 Euros! (About $150 or so, current exchange rate.)

I’m female and not at all fashion conscious – i.e., I don’t know what Mom Jeans are, but have an uneasy suspicion they’re what I wear. When I need a new pair, I go to Kohl’s and try on three or four brands in a couple of sizes to find what fits – usually pay about $25/pair and buy two pairs at a time.

Male.
I almost always buy from Abercrombie. Usually about $75.00

Costco brand jeans are made by Lee - $12.95.

Geez, with what some of you are paying for, that would go along way to filling my gas tank. I guess you just gotta look good walking cuz you can’t afford to drive.

My husbands jeans are from $99 (on sale) to $200. My jeans cost about $200 on average but I like to wear True Religion, Diesel, Rock and Republic and Hudson. You can get jeans for really cheap or really expensive. It just depends where you go. They were probably designer jeans that you purchased. I mostly buy at Norstroms.

I usually try to buy secondhand, but I have odd proportions, so sometimes a trip to Kohl’s or Penny’s is in order. I generally pay in the $30-$40 range.

I don’t even want to pay $30 for Levis, I’m wearing holy jeans that are 15 years old.

To those who asked, I was at Nordstrom. (Which tends to be at about the same price as Macy’s. Slightly higher, but not much). And the waistband needed to be taken in quite a bit. There was room for a small canteloupe back there. I didn’t buy the jeans - there was too much shock.

It’s nice to know that the shock was not entirely unreasonable. Thanks for the reassurance that I’m not just being old and miserly.

I would usually go to one of the cowboy stores in the area to buy Wranglers (Levis, Gap, Old Navy, BR just don’t fit)- which I think are in the $50 range. But those stores aren’t close, but even with gas, they are cheaper than $200 - so, off I go.

Lately I’ve been buying simple basic Wrangler jeans from Target for $14.95 a pair. They’re…just jeans. Nothing special or “stylish” but they don’t look nerdy either. I’m female but prefer men’s jeans because they fit me better and don’t have weird useless pockets or goofy stitching.

I personally think most of the expensive “designer jeans” are ugly, but that’s just me. YMMV.

My Levi’s were about sixty dollars each. I’m not sure what I paid for alterations, but it wasn’t $30 each (had one pair hemmed and both taken in at the waist).

Speaking of jeans, is anyone else not loving this pleated look? I’ve already gotten a couple holes in my pleats.
