I live in NJ and my taxes just went up to 4K a year. Sigh.
Well, I just bought a house, so I haven’t had to pay taxes on it yet, but last year it was $727. (3 bedroom 2100 sq ft on .14 acres, just bought for $187,000) Seems like this region has very cheap property taxes.
Cook County (IL) USED to be one of the highest in the region, if not the nation (My folks were paying nearly 2,000 a year in prop taxes on a SFH nearly 20 years ago) but now, taxes are exploding all over the place.
Lake Co. (IN) has just reassessed property taxes, making a house worth 180k pay almost 4,000 in taxes. My humble abode is only worth about 150k and we pay less than half of that, here in Cook Co.
We’re finally paying the price for all of this sprawl.
For my 1032 sq ft home on a 1 acre lot in Tennessee, my last property tax bill was $432. I’m not exactly sure how much my taxes will be for the 150 year old farmhouse on 14 acres I just bought, but I expect it to be not a great deal more.

I live in NJ and pay 8.5K on a house that’s tax appraised at 250k. NJ taxes suck.
2700 sq ft home in small town Ohio. $800 per year.
4500 sq. ft. on 2.5 acres in NJ - $24,000
2300 sft home worth approx. $250k in Michigan suburb- $3500 +/- per year.
Four bed, three bath 2400 square foot ranch. Half acre. Appraised at about $190,000
Milwaukee suburb, $4400 per year.
Nutmagnet, Friggin’ OUCH!!
I have a smallish house 1700 sq ft on 22+ acres, 5 acres on Kentucky lake where I am building a house (3000 sq ft but not completed yet) , and 7 acres in town that has 21 rental units on it. My total property tax is about $1400. There are some advantages to living waaaay out in the country.
$6000 in NJ. Just got reassessed. It doubled
$6000 a year for me in Massachusetts too.
$9800 on a $320k house in Texas. Price we pay for no state income tax, I suppose.
The property tax on the house (in the city) I just moved out of was around $550 a year.
2BR, 2BA, nothing fancy and old as the hills.
Lest you think that’s cheap, consider I’m in West Virginia.
Uncommon “Ouch!” indeed. They went up about $2K from last year. There seems to be a lot of inequities in our town and county. A lot of the tax is county, followed by state, then town.
NutMagnet, time to move to Alberta. We just had the appraiser out last Thursday. Not yet complete, our home is 4383 sq/ft on 3.2 acres of trees. He’s telling us our taxes will be around $3k (ish).
2200 sq. ft. on a postage stamp in Napa County, CA, purchased for $279,000 – taxes currently around $3200.
~$3600 on a ~$275000 house. We’re in inincorporated Cook County, Illinois, so while the taxes are a bit cheaper, we also don’t get some services (like we have to pay to use a library, and like our police is the sheriff).
New Jersey taxes are just plain out of sight. To get reassessed and then doubling your tax is wrong.I thought that we had them bad back here in CA. We pay about $1900 on a 1200 sq.ft. home that we bought 18 years ago.
In Indiana, my 2100 s.f. , 53-year-old house that just appraised for $155k requires me to pay $3, 800 in taxes annually. This is INDIANA, people.
