How much do you put in the collection plate?

Okay, I’m a heathen now, but when I was a kid, it was always 50c (they gave us a box of little envelopes with the date on 'em) and as an adult, something like five bucks. How much do you put in the collection plate? Does someone put in enough for the whole family, or is each family member on his own?

When I was little, it was a thrill to get to put money in, so we (my cousins and I) would each get a buck or some change. I have no idea how much the adults were putting in. I do remember my mom occasionally putting in a larger bill and fishing out change . . .

Are you talking about church? If so, my wife and I and my child put in $40 a week.

You’re supposed to put momey in? :smack:

duh…money!

Our church requests 7% of our income if we are able, plus donations of time as volunteer work. We are struggling a little this year so I am donating a little less and volunteering more.

If it’s an ‘extra’ collection or non-pledged funds I usually throw in $5 or so.

The standard tithe of 10% of my income. That’s gross not net people! We Episcopalians pledge and get little reminders from time to time to remind us how up to date or far behind we are on our pledge.

Hey. I am Episcopalian too and I know what you are talking about. We get them every week and usually feel guilty and write a “catch-up” check.

I try to make a decision at the beginning of the year (based on my current salary) and write a check for that amount to put in during the offering. My church doesn’t have pledges; churchgoers are supposed to look around, notice that it’s a big church with a lot of ministries and ask the Spirit to lead you in giving time and money.

When I was little, my parents led by example and prompting. When I finally got regular money (baby sitting and paper route) I was very encouraged to set aside money for offering first, required to put aside money college savings second, and then allowed to spend the rest as I wanted. I don’t remember them giving us money to put in the offering, nor giving for us (our money, our responsibility).

I’m about at a proper tithe amount but I’m thinking of bypassing the middleman. Well the collection plate anyway. No, I’m not going to throw a wad of money in the air so that God can keep what he catches  Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a program where offering is made directly from my bank account. It will save me having to write checks or having gaps when I’m out of town. My job has a pretty good incentive bonus plan but the checks are more irregular depending on how many hours I bill so I’ll write checks for that since there are always special needs.

Episcopalian here and we pledge $50 per week. Some weeks we give a little more, some weeks we give a little less, but it evens out over the course of the year.

Our parish Finance Committee chairman sends quarterly statements, along with an analysis of pledges. Someone in our parish pledges nearly $30,000 per year - that’s a lot of tithing. I’d really like to see the person just bring in a bunch of change and put it in the collection plate one Sunday.

Now I know about tithing, but the church I grew up in had an offering specifically for that, and then a “Love Offering” (I’m assuming at this point that it meant, "If you love Rev. So-and-So, pony up an extra few bucks for braces for his kid), and other offerings to meet other needs (a fund for a new building, etc.).
