I’m sure its been asked before, but how much?
Does it vary with order size (percentage), or flat rate?
If we order $60 of take-out, I have no idea if I should tip the same as if I order $25 or take-out.
What’s your rule of thumb?

I tip 15% of the bill unless there are extenuating circumstances. Once the restaurant lost my order so it was free. I still tipped him 15% of the original cost. I would tip less if the delivery guy did something stupid. Stepping on the flowers in front of my house would reduce the tip for example.
I usually treat food delivery people the same way I would treat servers in a restuarant. I will tip 15-20% of the total cost of the order.
I give the driver $5 no matter how much the order costs. If it’s a really really big order, and I mean lots of stuff - not price - like 15 pizzas or five entrees or something, I add more.
I have the same exact method as Missy.
I was always unsure about it until last month (enough, too much). The delivery girl from the pizza place asked me “do you work for tips?”. I told her no and asked her why. She said “you are the best to deliver to, you tip well, you don’t make us wait, that kind of stuff. We argue over who gets to deliver here”. I thought that was cool - since, I was totally expecting her to tell me, ‘five bucks? you are the cheapest person alive.’ LOL.
For larger (volume) orders or really bad weather, I tip higher.
Bad weather = Bigger tip.
If it’s to nasty for me to go out, I’m going to reward the poor person who has to do it for me.
We’ve found that once you get a reputation for tipping decently, your pizzas arrive hotter and with less mess-ups.
I don’t cache money. But I have, um, quite a bit of 7.62 NATO rifle ammunition, and I do plan on caching much of it in the near future.
Sorry, please ignore my previous post. That was meant for another IMHO thread. :smack:
I usually tip 20% to 25% for satisfactory service.
What does everyone tip for very small orders? Sometimes the kids and I will get breakfast at a local restaurant out here in the county. The food is really cheap there, and it’s not uncommon for the entire bill to be only $10 or so. So do I tip $2? No. I tip more ($3 to $3.50). In other words, for very small orders, I think you should increase the percentage.
Around here $2 is standard for one pizza, a few chinese meals, etc. Bigger is better, of course, but most kids are scraping together the $10 for the meal, much less the money for a tip, so anything is appreciated.
I’ve never ordered more than $15-$20 worth of food, so I wouldn’t know about bigger stuff.
If it’s really cold or rainy or icy, I tip more, of course. If it’s really hot, I offer cold coke.
My pizza bill is always $12/$13-something. I always hand the driver a $20 bill and say “keep the change”. My pizza always gets delivered in 20-30 minutes (even at 8 p.m. on a Friday), it’s always nice and hot, and I usually get a ‘freebie’ of some sort, such as a 2-liter of Moutain Dew or some breadsticks.
Hook up servicepeople at the places you frequent. We’re in the position to return the favor, and will be more than glad to do so.
The only food I order in regularly is Indian. I usually tack on an extra couple dollars or three to the check (I NEVER have any cash, I have some kind of problem with holding onto cash for more than eight seconds), depending on how big the order is or how bad the weather is. I definitely tip more if it’s snowing or really, really, really cold. I’m a single person and my orders don’t usually come to all that much.
