How much does it cost to have a car shipped across the country

My older brother’s hyundai died and he wants a Corolla. He is looking at ebay but only in a 200 mile radius. If he went beyond that and chose no radius, how much would it costs to have the car delivered to him? Is there a ballpark estimate for how much this would cost? I’d assume its $500 or so, but I do not know.

Don’t hyundais have 10 year warranties? Has the brand even been around for 10 years?

Just wondering.

whups I take it back. Looks like hyundai came out in 1986 in the U.s

Three or four years ago I asked about shipping my Willys from L.A. to Bellingham (about 1,200 miles or so). I called a place in the Yellow Pages, and they said it would be $700.

The cost will depend on the distance, varying charges between companies, mode of transport (flatbed, multi-level car rig, fully enclosed trailer, etc.). Probably best to call a few companies to see what they charge.

We’ve shipped our big sedan (Oldsmobile 88) halfway across the country a few times (DFW-Seattle roundtrip, and DFW-Phoenix roundtrip). It was back in the nineties, and IIRC about 6-800 bucks per trip (each way).

Interesting sidenote: On one journey it spent 4 days on an auto carrier beneath another car with a leaking battery. I ended up getting a complete new paintjob courtesy of the carrier (including rental car while it was in the shop). Make sure the carrier is insured. (racking my brain, but can’t remember the name of the carrier). One time Mayflower moved it along with our furniture. They just drove it up into the 18-wheeler on a ramp!

An ex of mine needed a car shipped from Seattle, WA to Charlotte, NC a few years ago (about 2,850 miles.) She ended up finding a service that waited until they had extra room on a truck going that route anyway and did it for dirt cheap. It took about - IIRC - 7 weeks to get the car but the price was just right.

If your brother can wait awhile he might want to look into something like that.

I take it that your brother is considering buying a car (which I assume to be used), sight unseen, and then paying hundreds of dollars to ship it across the country?

What a terrible idea. Better to buy a one-way plane ticket, check out the car, have a mechanic look at it, and drive it back.

I looked at getting a car hauler to do it when I bought my Chrysler and it was going to be about a grand from all the places I checked, and I checked probably close to twenty places.

We bought a vehicle on ebay (after alot of research on the dealer/seller and their feedback) and it has been a GREAT vehicle. Top marks and big savings. We looked into costs of flying there, driving time back, fuel, hotel room and mileage on the vehicle. It was WAY more than a commercial shipper. Ours ran $700 even from central Texas to central Florida and took 6-7 days IIRC. This was about 3 years ago. With the shipping, we still saved ABUNCH going this route. Be careful… it can work.

Last month I shipped a Subaru Forster from Northern Virginia to a suburb of Seattle—approx 2750 miles. The total cast was $1047. It took about 20 days. The car was fine.
