How much money is in the world? Is this a quantity that doesn’t change with time i.e. there’s always the same amount of money in the world at all times? Or the amount changes?
Maybe if the amount of money raises its value decreases so at the end is the same(?)
According to the World Bank (appropriately enough :)), the World’s total GDP in 2011 was $70 trillion.
The value does indeed change, in real terms. Total GDP is the value of all goods and services. As we can make more and do more, it increases.
World GDP has not only been increasing but accelerating, the recent slight downturn notwithstanding.
It’s a common misconception that there’s a fixed pot of money and for one country to get richer, another must get poorer. It’s also a misconception that GDP is necessarily tied to resources, such that for GDP to increase, we must mine/extract more “stuff” (though this misconception is less far from the truth, as resources and GDP are coupled).
I’m not accusing the OP of making these misconceptions, just getting my 2c out there.
You need to define your terms. What do you mean by money? Do you mean currency alone? Do you include checking accounts? Savings accounts? CDs?
What about bonds? Stocks? The value of land? Generally the stuff in this paragraph are called assets, rather than money. In the previous paragraph it’s a matter of definition: the central bank in the US for example would consider checking accounts and currency to be part of M1 (for which they no longer report data) and savings accounts to be part of M2. They also have M3 which is an even broader definition of money.
The amount of currency and the value of checking accounts in the world grow all the time. In fact they generally grow faster than the total inflation adjusted value of goods and services - or real growth in GDP as described in the previous post.
