Much to my dismay, I have misplaced my wallet. After a brief ritual of frenzied searching, panic, and mourning, I decided that the sooner I get everything replaced the better.
Most stuff is simple enough to replace (credit cards are a simple phone call) but the work-related license paperwork is a hassle- I may need to go get another physical JUST to get a medical card for my CDL, along with another card that verifies I’ve had annual training in the past year. And the best part, the HR department at my work is closed today for MLK day. I don’t think the DMV is open today, either
THe good news is this week I am off on vacation at work, so I certainly have time to take care of it. But its still not fun having to replace it. However, I’m sure that there may be others with much more difficult to replace documents/cards that got lost in their wallet.
…Just my luck in a week from now, when everything is replaced, some good samaritan will have mailed me my misplaced wallet :smack:
Speaking as someone who has lost her wallet 3 times (and is just 22) it’s a major, MAJOR pain in the ass. You have to cancel everything. Then you have to go to the bank (during business hours, when, you know, I have work and school and shit) and get cash out. Then the DMV (or AAA, which is a lifesaver. Haven’t been to the DMV since I was 16).
Have to get a new health insurance card (people! you should be carrying this with you at all times!), new school ID, new work ID.
It’s one of those things I fear happening, so I’ve got a document at home listing everything in my wallet, along with the toll-free numbers for the various companies. I figure that I may not know offhand everything that’s in there, so I’ve tried to document it as best I could.
I’ve only lost my wallet once and I’ve learned my lesson. I had my social security card in there and all kinds of other personal info. When I called the credit card and credit report companies, they all asked for information that could be obtained from my wallet. I now carry only the basics: debit card, license, health insurance card and maybe a few dollars. In fact, I’ve been thinking about simply carrying a money clip.
Funny thing about the medical insurance card- I had lost it in the ER months ago, went online to get it replaced. But I didn’t think the ‘replacement’ procedure went through, so I called customer support to confirm it.
2 days later, I got a new medical insurance card.
Day after that, I got an additional one.
Week after that, Kaiser mailed me my medical insurance card, which had been found at the ER.
So I had three. One I put in my wallet, and at least I have a couple ‘spares’
I lost my wallet twice and both times the worst part is three or four weeks later when someone called and said they found it, (minus the money of course, and with the charge cards there, but have been used).
So basically I paid out $20.00 to the DMV to get a new ID and paid to get a new debit card from my bank and then they were returned along with everything but the money
I lost my wallet at the end of October, and still haven’t replaced everything. The biggest need to replace item is the social security card (which arguably shouldn’t have been there in the first place). The most annoying is the lost free loaf of bread for buying 12.
The license was replaced quickly, and neither my library card nor anything work related was actually in the wallet.
This is a bizarre and fairly relevant story. I lost my wallet 2 months ago (well, dropped it in the parking lot and 2 minutes later when I returned it was stolen) and over two years ago on a bus - on the last ride of the night. I called the transit authority, spoke to the station manager where the bus went at the end of the night, followed up a week later, and came up with nothing.
My mother calls me and tells me my wallet’s been sent there (I just graduated, so my “permanent” address is their home), with the return town and state of the bus station, but not the street address or any other identification on the envelope. Everything’s in it - health insurance card, credit card, debit card, license, and school ID. Even stranger, the Coach wallet is perfectly intact, nary a scuff on it.
Did someone have a change of heart? Why after 2 1/2 years? Why not keep the Coach wallet at least?
A few years ago my wallet was stolen just as I had arrived in the Madrid airport.
In spite of what they advertise, it actually took from a week to 10 days to replace my credit cards. I couldn’t get a new driver’s license without proof of my Social Security number, and I couldn’t get that without a birth certificate. And that was a hassle. Then there are all the miscellaneous cards that had to be replaced: Bank card, Costco, supermarket cards, library card, AARP, AAA, etc.
Whoever stole my wallet never even used the credit cards; all they wanted was the cash. I would have gladly given them the cash if I could have kept the rest.
Possibly. It seems like a weird coincedence that it went missing the morning after I mentioned I wasn’t interested in a relationship. Of course she swore up and down she didn’t do anything, offered to let me rummage through her stuff if I didn’t believe her. I told her at the moment, I didn’t care if she did something to it in retaliation; I just wanted my wallet back. She insisted she didn’t take it or do anything with it. I canceled my cards immediately just to be safe.
I went through this a few months ago. Searched everywhere, couldn’t find it. Went through the hassle of replacing everything: license, debit cards, insurance cards, et… Found it a few days later behind the toilet.
