What I mean is if a customer comes in to say, cash or deposit a check, what info can a teller find out about them? I assume account balance and that type stuff, but what else?
It’s going to vary from bank to bank, depending upon the software running at that particular bank.
Typically they will be able to see demographic info (name, address, phone, acct #), possibly SSN and birthdate, date the acct was opened, balance(s), recent transaction history, etc.
If you have a loan, typically the teller will NOT have access to information from your credit app, such as income, outstanding loans, mortgage and other such info, but it would probably be available for a loan officer to call up with proper authorization.
Thank, I guess that answer my question. I over heard the town busy body saying that she knows how old eveyone in town is, her daughter is a teller at the largest bank here. I was thinking WTF? Guess she has access to just about everyones DOB.
If a bank employee is sharing personal information about customers, she should be reported to management. This would not be tolerated by any reputable business, and is probably against the law.
Her daughter might, but that doesn’t mean she should. I’m sure her daughter had to sign confidentiality agreements but even if not, part of the ethics of being in that position is to guard any information you see.
Perhaps the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
Any reputable bank will have a privacy policy in place, and it wil usually be fairly easy to find on their website.
I say “fairly” because most bank’s websites are pretty crowded, but you should still be able to find the word “Privacy” on it.
I can’t speak for other banks, but we take customer information privacy very seriously. I don’t even have access to any customer data, but as an employee, I still have to go through annual training, certifications and signing of documents swearing that I will not improperly disclose customer information in the event that I do accidentally come across any. (eg: in case someone sends me a server’s core dump, there may be fragments of names or account numbers) The people that have customer contact have to go through even more training and certification.
At a minimum, meet with the branch manager. Better yet, head up the food chain to a regional manager, as it’s entirely possible that local manager knows about but doesn’t really care about the blabbermouth teller as they may be a good friend.
I’m sure most of the employee’s at this bank (a very reputable place btw) are fine people with high work ethics. But I do have my doubts about the daughter. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if she blabbed to mom about customers info. We are friends with some of the upper management at the bank. I can fix her wagon so to speak, if she is sharing info she shouldn’t be. Thanks for the answers!
