How much should I expect to pay for a roll of carpet?

I live in an apartment with tile (I know, horrible!) floors. My roomate and I are looking to get a roll of inexpensive carpet that fits our college budget. We’re not sure how much we’re looking to spend. the area to cover is about 15’ x 20’
Obviously it’s temporary carpeting for the next year.
Anyone have any thoughts?

I suggest checking Craigslist and Freecyle for your area. I once gave away carpet on Freecyle, and I’m sure other people do as well.

As for what to expect to pay at a home improvement or flooring store, I have no idea. It could be a lot cheaper to buy some area rugs and warm slippers.

Perhaps you can buy a remnant and cut it down? Otherwise, the cost could be quite high.

Burberry, plushes, and fringe: Oh My!

See if there’s a remnant outlet in your town. My dining room rug is a remnant, approximately 12x15, and it cost $150 (8 or 10 years ago, maybe?).

150-200 is a good ballpark number. The issue you will find is most places won’t have a 15 foot remnant. 12x whatever is much more common. Most places that install/stock 15 foot rolls aren’t going to sell a 20 foot cut off as a remnant it would be full price.

If your willing to accept like a 12x15 or something like that, you can probably get down around $130 with all the edges bound. ie a rug.

Just say no to rugs.

For a cheap fix, go to Walmart or Garden Ridge. They’ll have big carpet pieces with bound edges for somewhere around $50 to $70. You can always get a couple if you have a big area but you often don’t need carpet at the edges of the room.

Was just in a similar situation, I found two remnants at a local carpet store in nearly identical shades of Realtor Beige. Once I got them down with the pile in the same direction, you couldn’t tell they were different colors. (They actually may be identical, even the guys at the store weren’t sure). Nice thing about buying two smaller remnants (~6x12 ea.) is that I could bring them home in my car. Also didn’t bother getting it finished at the edges. Total cost: $60. Now, for a the bedroom of a 30 year old woman it looks pretty damn cheap. But for some college kids it would be fine.

FWIW, the did have a plenty of remnants that were full room size, 12x20 and such. This was Show Carpets on Archer, for anyone in Chicago.
