How much should I expect to pay for shiitake mushrooms?

There’s a recipe I want to try that uses 10 oz. of shiitakes. Trouble is, my local food source (a major market) doesn’t have loose shiitakes — only prepackaged, which cost $18/lb.

What SHOULD I expect to pay for them? Any suggestions on sources? I’m not hugely inclined to grow my own, especially if such kits are themselves expensive, but I acknowledge that’s an option.

$18 a pound is outrageous for shiitakes. That’s more than some wild mushrooms. I have seen them locally for around $6 to $7 a pound, sold loose.

Do you have an Asian market like 99 Ranch near you? That’s probably the best place to look for them.

Before or after the shiit is washed off?

j/k

**Answer: A shiit load.

Could we cut it out with the shiity jokes?

And now, for the worst joke I could possibly… make.

Yeah, around $7/lb is what I’ve seen them at generally around here.

I dunno, I thought they were funny. I read the first one and did a spiitake.

Well, there’s an Asian supermarket near me that has the mushrooms loose, but they’re $15 a pound still. I guess I should try elsewhere? Still, I think I’ll have to travel quite a bit, and I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth it, even for this recipe that sounds good…
