I’m having a new Queen size mattress delivered tomorrow sometime. I paid a delivery charge $60 + $10 for delivery on Saturday. They are also supposed to take out my olf full size mattress away. I live on the first floor of an apartment building, but there are some stairs outside to get into the building.
How much should I tip?
I tipped $5 per delivery guy last time I went through this…

Oh my gosh. I’ve had lots of stuff delivered and never even considered tipping. The delivery guys are employees of the store, and sometimes it’s the owner.
Damn. Who don’t I have to tip? Should I tip the UPS guy too? He delivers stuff.
I don’t tip the delivery guys either. If it’s really hot, I offer them a Pepsi, but other than that, no tipping unless they’re bringing something edible.
Do you live on the top floor of a five story walkup?
Are they going to have to do something besides the normal delivery stuff?
Is you old mattress, that they are taking away covered in blood or other incriminating evidence?
Otherwise, you don’t have to tip them.

I’ve often bemoaned the tipping trend. During the last five years or so I consider myself to have evolved into a no-looking-back adult.
I tip delivery guys who have to carry heavy stuff. I tipped my carpet cleaner when I felt he did a good job. I tip my newspaper carrier and mailman @ Xmas. I think the only regular providers I don’t tip are garbagemen. They make a lot of $$ just doing their job since it’s kinda yucky. I figure if someone makes less money than I (but now I’m a SAHM, so ??) then I’ll tip them for expended energy if it was spent politely and to my expectations.
And, um, yeah, I did tip my UPS & FedEx guy @ Xmas too. I have frequent deliveries as I’m an internet-shopping addict. I know these two guys by first names and if they’ve got a delivery for me and I’m not home, I leave a note with my cell # and they’ll call me so I can come to them if it’s important to have it now. Which it usually is. I’m very impatient. I WANT IT NOW!!

For a singular delivery of something really big/bulky and there’s only two people, $10 each. If there’s 3 or more, then that’s just wasteful of company’s resources and they don’t really do much extra, so they then get $5 each. Less energy needed per individual, I figger. Carpet cleaner got $10.
UPS/FedEx/Mail/Paperguy each get $20 at Xmas.

I’ve never tipped the delivery guys other than offering a can of diet coke or something.
I’m in the don’t tip’em school. I can’t see myself tipping someone that’s getting paid a normal wage (as in not a waitress’ wage) to do their job. The only people like that I tip are people that I plan (or do) use regularly or someone that does something very well or more then they are expected to have to do normally. For example, I wouldn’t tip the UPS or fedex person, I wouldn’t tip the matress guy, unless maybe they had to get the mattress into some hard to get to place. But I do tip the person that cuts my hair, my tattoo artist and my bartender.
