How much to carpet a house?

I am thinking about re-carpeting my house. It is a little 2 bedroom, one bath farmhouse totaling about 1100 square feet. Of that 1100 square feet, the kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom will not be carpeted so I’ll say 800 square feet of new carpet will be needed. The padding that is currently in place is in good shape as far as I can tell. What do you think it will cost me to re-carpet my house assuming various types of carpet?

Your best bet for rough estimates is to try http://homedepot.com under Flooring. Then call their custom-work center for an installation estimate. They always ask to come out, but if you say you are still in the early shoping stages they will ballpark it for you and just say “Don’t say I told you”

Home Depot medium grade stuff is about $20/yd. They usually have a free padding special. They charge $2/yd to remove and discard old carpet and padding + $1.50/yd for moving furniture if not and empty new construction type install + about .15cents/foot for install. Also add 10 to 20% for wastage.

These were the prices HD quoted me in Washington D.C. just a few days ago. The labor costs may be different in Texas.

We just did the second floor of our place for about $4000.00 USD. 3 BR’s, hallway and stairs. Don’t know the exact sq. footage, but the carpet was $32/yd. so you can do the math.

We removed the old carpet and padding ourselves and also moved the furniture. Although they could have done the install in one day, we had them do it over two days so we didn’t have to schlep all the furniture down the stairs. We moved everything out of the master BR and they did the install in there on day 1. That night we moved all of the furniture into the MBR and they did the rest on day 2.

Installation usually includes the pad, and you’ll want new padding anyway since not having it done will most likely void the warranty.
