It’s the biological imperative, no? And of course, it’s all hypothetical so anything is possible. I see in that thread that some referenced Sophie, from the book Sophie’s Choice–which is fiction so again, anything is possible. I can easily say, “kill all the X” to save my kids because it’s not real and there is no downside for me to do so.
I don’t know that I could sell any of my family members–the scenarios needed to create such a situation are so bizarre that a business deal would be the least of my concerns, I think.
Ask me if I would help my kids survive in a war zone or similar and I’d say yes, but frankly, things like hurricane Katrina or the bombing of Dresden etc happen only rarely. And sadly, those on the margins die–infants, the elderly, the lame and the weak. My kids (well, 2 out of 3) are almost adults–they have a much better chance of survival than I do, since they are late teens and I’m looking at 50…
