How Old Was Gloria On "All In The Family" Supposed To Be

Was watching an episode tonight where there is a flashback to when Mike and Gloria met.

Archie and Edith went out for the weekend to visit Aunt Iola. So Gloria was staying home to study with Debbie Valentine.

Mike at first says he can’t go on a date 'cause he is picketing the Nixon inaugral ball.

We know from other episodes that Mike And Gloria were already married when Nixon ran agains MacGovern in 72. In fact it was the first time Gloria could vote.

So that must mean they met in 1969 during Nixon’s first win.

Since Gloria is studying she must be in high school in 1969

We also know Gloria says she never went to college. After the show started Archie threw a fit when Gloria went out and got a job.

Since her first job was AFTER she married Mike how old was she suppose to be when the series started? And what did she do from the time she graduated high school till she got married. Sit around and do nothing?

Any more insight would be appreciated

Gloria never went to college but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t have gone to secretarial school (still a popular option for women in the late 1960s), or nursing school (which would not necessarily be “college”) or some other post-secondary school.

So she could be older than you think.

However, the 25th Amendment (which lowered the voting age to 18) was ratified in 1971, which meant that an 18-year old Gloria would be able to vote in her first election in 1972. Which means she could have been as young as 14 when she met Mike in 1969.

So she could be younger than you think.

I hope this helped.

She was born in 1948 and she was 23 or so when they show started in 1971 so there’s probably a limit as to how young she could be realistically portrayed.

Since you had to be 21 to vote in 1968, Gloria could have been anywhere from 14 to 20. Since she was still in high school, I’d guess 16 or 17.
