"You're On Your Own" Inagrual Addess (Archie Bunker Quote)

I was watching a rerun of All In The Family last night and it was the one where Gloria gets attacked and almost sexually assulted.

The police detective comes over and shows Gloria what kind of questions she can expect. Like her posing nude and wearing short skirts etc.

Edith takes Gloria aside and explains she knew a boy and he made advances on her and she kneed him in the “you know,” and got away. Then Edith says “I always wonder what happened to those girls no lucky enought to have got away.”

This makes Gloria determained to file charges. But Archie and Mike are against it. But Gloria says I have a duty to all those other women who he might attack.

Archie says “You have a duty to your family first.” “You have a duty not to drag the family name through the courts.”

Then Archie says “As the President said in his Inagurual Address, ‘You’re On You’re Own. Don’t expect any help’.”

This got a HUGE laugh. And Gloria decides not to persue the matter any further.

Now I looked up the episode. It was called “Gloria, The Victim” and it aired 17 March 1973. So it must have been Nixon’s address.

My question is does anyone remember this and what it was all about? You know how Archie Bunker screws ups quotes (He also said God took a jawbone out of the grass and slew the army of the Philippines)

Here’s Nixon’s second inaugural address. I think the relevant part starts at around paragraph 24, with such statements as “In our own lives, let each of us ask—not just what will government do for me, but what can I do for myself?”

Thanks for the quick reply. What threw me was I was looking for Nixon’s FIRST address. Seeing that Nixon’s second address was in 1973 only a few months before the episode aired, it’s pretty impressive the writers were able to work that joke in so quick.

I guess the time from script to film was less back then.
