The first time I knew of this was a fellow student in 7th grade. I was 12 at the time (as was he, I presume, maybe 13). I didn’t really know the guy, though. The first time this happened to someone I knew was when I was 16. A friend’s 11-year-old brother was hit by a van while playing in the street and was killed. Very sad day indeed.
