I’ve heard a lot of good things about the remake of A Star is Born, but a very close friend said it was very sad. I’ve been a bit of an emotional wreck lately, so I’m a bit hesitant to watch it even though it really seems like a film I’d like.
So, for those who have seen it, how would you rate it on a 1-5 hankies scale?
Well, I assume if you know that it’s sad, you probably know why it’s sad.
I knew what was going to happen beforehand, and I didn’t shed a tear. I was somber, not “sad.” It’s pretty telegraphed and foreshadowed even if you don’t know.
If you’re triggered by that subject, you should probably stay away though.
Spoilers? This is a remake of a film made in 1937, 1954, and 1976. Does the concept spoilers apply?
The ending is not quite the same as the other versions. Same general result though.
Yes, it does. I didn’t spoil Murder on the Orient Express when that horrible remake came out. I assume not everyone knows the story even though I’ve read the book numerous times.
I don’t care if someone spoils Hamlet or The Iliad, but I don’t think everyone knows A Star is Born.
Personally, I was underwhelmed, 3/5.
The saddest part? Lady Gaga’s two facial expressions. Though as far as facial expressions go, she nails both of them. 
My wife had no idea. She had never seen any of the previous versions and knew nothing about them.
It deals with a subject that will be more upsetting to some people than others. If you are one particularly sensitive to this, it could be traumatic. If you are in the other group, maybe a 3.
Just so we are all on the same page, we are talking about Bradley Cooper singing?
Same here. I knew the other three films existed, and the basic plotline of young newcomer becomes huge star, but had no clue whatsoever about the ending.
Sorry that came out more negative than I intended. I liked it and would recommend it, I had some friends rave about it, though, and I wouldn’t have gone that far.
He is going downhill (though still popular).

All the versions end the same way. I saw the Streisand version.
I was tempted to see the current one, but knowing how it will end wasn’t worth it. I don’t like sad endings.
The Streisand / Kristofferson version is the only one I’ve seen, and that, 43 years ago. I don’t really remember it that well, but I do recall how it ends and the ending of the current version sounds waaaaaaay sadder. Not only because of the way Norman dies but because the characters seem more likable. Also, the actors themselves are a lot more likable, IMO.
