How soon did you know your SO was The One?

This has come up before. As mentioned, the wife and I met as grad students at the U of Hawaii (just like Obama’s parents ). We’ve tried to think back and remember, but there seems to be no particular point in time that we can recall. At some point in our 2-1/2 years there, it became assumed that we would get married, but neither of us remembers the subject being broached originally, and there was certainly no formal popping of the question.

Actually, we did not start dating until the end of our first school year, so we were not actually together 2-1/2 years in Hawaii. A year after we started dating, at the end of our second school year I took her to the mainland for the first time. I still had close relatives to introduce her to. By that time, it must have been decided. So within a year. Say … six months then maybe?

We’re still going strong almost 10 years after the post above! Just a change of venue back to Hawaii.

We never lived less than 600 miles apart until we got married. We met when she visited a friend of hers at my college, and I invited her to go ice skating just before she left to go home. We had an intense but sporadic year, then broke up. For the next 4 1/2 years we kept in touch and I visited her a couple of times, and then thanks to Amtrak freezing my hamster we started talking and writing again. (Long before generally available email.) I invited her to help me move from Illinois to Louisiana and we got engaged. We both pretty much decided that no one else was acceptable. Will be 40 years next month, so I guess we were right.
If we took bets about how long it would last at our wedding we could have cleaned up.

Less than 2 months, and the feeling was mutual. We’ve been together for almost 19 years now, married for 18+.
