Sez here everyone’s favorite New Age composer and fatuous TV entertainment reporter used to live with Oprah Winfrey, back when they were both doing local TV in Nashville.
That says more about Oprah’s intelligence than John’s, admittedly, except how they broke up:
I don’t think that was supposed to mean that he noticed for the first time, just that when he noted the difference this time, it was then he decided that he couldn’t handle it anymore. Not that that reflects so much better on John Tesh either, but eh. At least he gave us “Roundball Rock.”
Maybe John Tesh and John Mayer are the same person. Funny how you never see them in the same room together. . .
I personally don’t see what’s wrong with him admitting that thirty years ago the thought of being in an interracial relationship was too much for him to handle(if he even actually said it). Everyone can’t be as progressive as us Dopers, ya know.
It’s an unauthorized biography. the same genre that revealed Frank Sinatra eating an omlete off a naked woman’s tummy, or Ono slipping cat shit into John’s raisin bran.
Agreed, and for those who didn’t click through to the article, he didn’t comment on the description of why they broke up, but merely acknowledged that they had dated. It was someone else’s description and choice of wording (either the article writer or Kitty Kelley) about the breakup reason.
First, give him a small measure of credit for being enlightened enough to enter the relationship in the first place. I think that right there puts him in the better minority of white American men of the 1970s.
Second, I think it is at least possible (given so little information) to interpret this as a matter of him being unable to handle the social stigma of an “interracial” relationship, rather than him being unable to handle being with a black woman. See the difference?
It doesn’t even need have anything to do with social stigma. Cultural differences can be divisive. That is technically breaking up with someone because of her race, but I wouldn’t consider it to be “racist”.
Because it’s been referenced so many times, Roundball Rock.
Whenever I hear this song, I think “Basketball”. Then I hear the announcer say “This is the NBA on NBC”, and then I think of the blimp over the stadium, welcoming us to the city and the stadium, introducing the teams…
It is a complete travesty that this song doesn’t get used. ESPN or TBS or whatever cable network ever buys the rights should be forced to buy the song as well.
If you’re curious about the song’s genesis, hereyou are.
