So, I decided to enlighten my coworkers and make hamentaschen with fig filling to bring in to work to share tomorrow. I stop by the store for a few ingredients that I know I don’t have around the house – orange zest, shortening and the fig preserves – only to come home and after starting to mix everything up realise I used the last egg making breakfast this morning. Now I have to wait to mix the dough until my daughter gets home at 9 – her bf promised to snag me an egg from his fridge. In the meantime, anyone got any other good traditional Purim recipes (preferably easy) I could whip up for a bunch of Southern women who are sick to death of dealing with tiny Purim orders?

I’ve never heard of so many unknown foods in an English paragraph. Hamentaschen? Purim? Orange zest? Southern women?

You’ve never heard of Southern women?
Heh, was wondering if you’d catch that.
I thought they were refered to as Southern Belles.
Not really, no.
I never met a hamentaschen I didn’t like, but my favorite filling is mun.
So, daughter and bf are here…no egg. Sheesh.
Purim is the most awesome holiday ever. Among other things, you’re commanded to eat a feast, and highly encouraged to drink more alcohol than normal - barring any problems that would contraindicate that, of course.
Hmm, I needed butter, but didn’t have any. I’ll give you an egg for some butter.
Hamentaschen? I am so there! Unfortunately, all I have are virtual eggs. I ate the last egg I had in the house earlier today.
Damn, it’s Purim already? Seems like just last week we had Hanukkah.
(I’ve got 2 dozen eggs in my fridge.)
Time for an Esther egg hunt.
Why don’t you run out again for some eggs?
And while your at it, you can try my mom’s favorite hamentaschen filling - strawberry jam and granola. Sounds stupid, I know, and its is - but it’s also delicious.
I shall be picking up eggs on my way home today. I am going to make some with fig filling and some with blueberry. Another lady I work with is going to make some with prune filling and poppy filling and we will see how it goes. Keep in mind, not a single Jewish person works here, we just have to deal with them (them being the women that want everything free and discounted, even though we are a wholesale company and they are already only paying 1/3 retail!) this time of year – I thought it might take the edge off to enjoy a little Purim yummies.
Purim starts on Pi Day this year, so I am a little early, but like I said, we’re not Jewish, I just thought it would be nice
Update – I got eggs and made 2 batches of hamentaschen. The first batch with fig preserves for the filling – absolutely delicious, except the fig preserves were a little too sweet for me. The second batch had tart cherry preserves and were like heaven in my mouth. Dang, why have my Jewish friends not told me about this unbelievably yummy cookie before? Seriously, the dough is good enough without the filling – I will likely keep the dough as a special home made cookie recipe!
There are rules about posting things like this without giving the recipe…aren’t there? There should be a rule about that…
hee hee – it’s easy enough:
1 large egg
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
1/8 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp fresh orange zest
1 tbsp orange juice
some kind of preserves for filling
Sift the flour, salt and baking powder together in one bowl, set aside. In another bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the shortening, egg and sugar until fluffy (cream it), add the zest and OJ and mix until completely incorporated. Stir in the flour mixture until you have a smooth dough. Roll dough into a ball, then flatten and chill for about an hour. Once the dough is chilled, preheat oven to 375 F. Roll dough out to about 1/4" thickness. Using a 5" biscuit round (or large glass) cut circles and lay on cookie sheet. Spoon 1/2 tbsp filling into the center of each round, then pull the sides up to form a triangle, leaving the filling exposed. They will look like little tri-cornered hats. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden. Grab as many as you can before the family realises they are out of the oven and runs you over to get to them!
I honestly thought that this thread was going to be about menopause.
Me too! It figures that the last post before mine said what I was going to say. Oh well, I least I got a cookie recipe out of it.
