To tell the truth, that evening was pretty much in the middle of a 2 week long driving trip, during which our family of 5 covered thousands of miles in our minivan from Chi to Maine via Philly/Boston/NY and back through Canada. As I recall it, some BS incident in the Kimball’s parking lot led to a near-divorce-level knockdown, dragout fight between me and the missus. So we weren’t exactly strolling about hand in hand, admiring the scenery (tho that didn’t stop us from getting ice cream!)
Can’t beat the the memories derived from a good old family driving vacation!
Another Chicago homey checking in. I grew up in the SW 'burbs of Chicago, ended up in the NW 'burbs about 16-18 years ago. Husband is another North side Polish dude - North Ave. and Kostner (by the old Schwinn factory) - he spent most of his life there. He ended up in Arlington Heights and since we’ve been together, we’ve stayed very very local (except for one bad year in Elgin).
I’ve always lived outside of Chicago - I tried moving with my second husband to Missouri to be closer to his mom, but there was no work, and while stuff was cheap, I had to come back here to work. In Missouri I ended up on food stamps and welfare, so I left after two or three months.
Now, my son is planning on college and the then navy, so after another year or so, we won’t really have anything keeping us here but family and work - we’ve talked about leaving, but I doubt we will - I have job security, and we need the money. Husband wants to go to Washington - or Montana or something - I want a steady paycheck.
My wife and I and both our families are all still local. And pretty much all of us were born here too. I don’t see moving either. The cost of living in other places (CA, Chicago, New England) makes me queasy, and I have no real reason to look. Now, if the need arose and the only option was to move I guess then I would. But it would have to be serious, lose-the-house-otherwise kind of serious.
