How to change my IP Address?

Windows 7. Does anyone know how i can do this? Also, can you change it a few times or is it only once you can do it? I know it involves resetting the modem but thats all.

Depends on how your ISP is setup. Your best shot is to unplug your modem for about 10 minutes and hope your ISP re-assigns the IP address assigned to you. If that doesn’t work, maybe try waiting longer. If you’re just trying to block your IP to a particular site for a limited time, I’d use a proxy service. I used the Hola Unblocker extension for Chrome to do it once.

The reason why i ask this is b/c i got banned in one site b/c i had created a second account with them. Its basically a messageboard forum, and i created a second account because i did not recall what my password was for the old one so i created another one,i figured no big deal. So i then get a message that my ip address shows my 2nd account and i can no longer have an account there anymore. Basically whenever i go to that site, shows me as banned.
I have optimum online internet.

It would be a lot simpler to contact the site’s admin and try to get your account back

Your IP address is determined by and at your ISP, not by your own computer or modem. Dialup IP addresses tend to change with each session, but on broadband it usually remains stable for months at a time, or even for the whole time you are with that ISP. You can, however, spoof your IP address by using a proxy, and that may work to get around a blocking.

Unplugging your modem for a day (unplugging the power) would probably do it. Your internet provider is likely to use the old IP for someone else who needs one.

Depends on whether you have a dynamic or static IP. I have a static IP which hasn’t changed for the last 18 years. To change it… I don’t know what I’d have to do. Even when i change providers, they always leave me with the same IP… only the billing is different. I imagine i would have to leave the internet completely and then start a new contact with a new provider.

Don’t dynamic IP’s change each time you reboot the modem or even start up the computer? At least that’s how it used to work.

Depends. Your ISP assigns IP addresses using DHCP. SOme hand out addresses on a first-come-first-serve basis. One phone company I dealt with said the IP was assigned by username, so you could not change address unless they felt like it. Or… Your ISP may hand out addresses on a first-come, first serve basis. The question is, what is the “lease duration” at which your modem’s claim to that address expires? If you are lucky, it is only a few hours or less and leaving the modem unplugged all night will reset it to a different address. The system reassigns IP or determines you have an existing lease from the DHCP pool based on the hardware’s MAC address, so your best shot is to swap modems with someone (if that works).

There’s not a lot of incentive to have short leases on a commercial ISP like the phone or cable company. The customer turnover is probably low, and odds are all the modems are on most of the time, so freeing up addresses after an hour is not really productive unless they are running so tight that they need the address from that one guy who’s off on holidays.

Go to a site like “whatismyip.com” and note your current external IP. Then check it the next morning to see if it has changed after leaving the modem unplugged for overnight; or if you go away for the weekend, try longer periods like 48 hours.

I’d suggest creating your next ID from Starbucks’, but if they care that much, the board owners are probably correlating all posts, not just address creating the ID. I’m not sure how relevant that is, considering that years ago I worked for a large company and all internet traffic for several thousand employees appeared to originate from one IP. However, the board if they care (if your posts are obnoxious) can do a reverse lookup and see if the posting address is from a large commercial organization (or Starbucks) or from a residential ISP. Depends how much you’ve ticked off the moderators.

Do certain isp providers not allow u to do it?

You would have to ask them, but in doing so they probably will not answer you.
