How to delete items from systray

OK, I must be an idiot. I downloaded a new Verizon DSL utility and it’s pretty much useless. It installed itself in the systray.

How do you remove items from the systray without deleting the program all together. I’m sure it must be easy, but I can’t figure it out.

Thanks.

P.S. Windows 98 SE

you can try disabeling it at startup (start>run>msconfig)

you may be able to close it by right clicking it in the systray or disabeling it withi the program but there is no easy way to remove a systray icon that I am aware of. IIRC the correct way would be a registry hack.

(leave it to M$ to make the correct way of getting your computer to do what you want a hack)

k2dave, thanks very much! Msconfig (under the startup tab) did the trick. I don’t know why they couldn’t put that in the Control Panel.

Cheers.

Icons on the System Tray represent running programs so the way to get rid of the Icons is to stop the programs from starting. Check the usual places: msconfig/startup is the place to start. You can find a very complete list of all the places from where programs can startup automatically which I have posted several times in the past.

I always recommend that everybody should be able to identify every program running on their computer and know what it does. You can often get rid of half of the crap running. To see what’s running run MSINFO32.exe and go to Software - Running Tasks. You should recognise everything in there.

thanks sailor I didn’t know about msinfo32.
