How to Dispose of Lithium Ion Battery

I have a large, Lithium ion battery for my weed whacker that has lived a full life and can no longer be charged. What is the best way to dispose of this?

Every location is different but usually your town will have a collection point for them. Typically the recycling center or maybe at town hall itself.

To find a battery recycling location near you, consult the following resources:

Further to what @What_Exit just posted, you could also check the website of the waste collection and recycling service at your location. Where I am, most transfer stations accept hazardous waste like batteries, old paint cans, petroleum liquids etc, and the site lists where those stations are located and what they do and don’t accept. Also, around here, hazardous waste disposal is free to encourage responsible disposal. It’s worth checking out your local municipality’s website in addition to the general links above. Sometimes it’s the municipality, sometimes it’s the county.

Our local drop-off spot is at the Water Treatment Plant that’s less than a mile away. Super simple. Put whatever you’re dropping off that they accept (almost everything that shouldn’t go in landfills) in the trunk of your car. Drive into the facility, make a left down the “street,” and stop at the stop signs. If no one is ahead of you, they’ll wave you into the shed area. You stop. Pop your trunk. They take out your “donations,” and you drive off. It’s so simple. A great service.

There are frequently drop boxes for battery disposal at Home Depot and Lowes. While you’re there, you can shop for a new weed whacker…
