How to email a Moderator?

When you email a Moderator, do you have to send from the email address listed in your SDMB profile? Or can you send from whatever address happens to be most convenient at the time, as long as you identify yourself?

I use a “free” email address for internet boards, because of the potential for nuisance messages, but it’s simpler to use the address set up with Outlook on my computer when I send to trusted recipients. Yes, I’m just being lazy.

Nope, you can send from anywhere. When you click on the “email” button below their post (or in their profile), you just get a screen that tells you the email address. This, of course, applies to every member.

The moderators have no way of knowing who is using which email address. If I use my Yahoo email to contact Tuba, for example, she doesn’t know off the top of her head (since there are 35K members or so!) if that’s my SDMB email.

And it doesn’t matter. What matters is that they know you’re enquiring about a SDMB matter. So you really should put “SDMB” or something similar in the subject field, just so they know what the email’s about. (I personally put “dantheman from the SDMB” up there.)

Putting SDMB in the subject is an excellent idea, as I get a LOT of spam, and I tend to delete stuff unread if it seems likely to be just another piece of spam.

If you want us to change stuff, for instance, if you want us to close or delete a post/thread, USE YOUR SDMB EMAIL. Sometimes we use this as a security check.

Send email requests to more than one moderator, too. We can’t all be online at once, and this increases your chances of getting your request done in a timely manner. If it’s a problem with a post or thread, the quickest, easiest way to do this is simply use the “Report this post to a moderator” link. That will send an email to all moderators of the forum.

Just to make sure there’s no confusion, in my post I was speaking not as a Moderator or Administrator or Grand Poobah of SDMB, none of which I am. I was speaking as a General User, albeit of the rank of Private, Second Class.

Thank you, dantheman and Lynn Bodoni. I was thinking maybe each mod has his or her own private hamster for cross-checking usernames with addresses on the emails they receive, and they could ignore those that don’t match. I will use SDMB in the subject line, thanks!

… and Lynn didn’t thwack you upside the head? dan, consider yourself lucky.

Yes, it’s a bright day indeed when I don’t get a proper thwacking.

Sorry to disappoint you, but we use the same poor hamsters as everyone else…and we get just as frustrated with their performance.
