For a while now, my laptop screen has had zero tension - won’t stand up at any angle on its own. I’ve gotten around this problem by putting something sturdy behind it to hold the screen up when I want to use it. Unfortunately, this greatly hinders its mobility and ability to function as a laptop.
I’d like to get the tension fixed in the hinge, but not break the bank in the process, if it’s possible. I’ve done various other internal fixes on the laptop (replaced the optical drive, keyboard), and I could probably do this if it’s not too involved and has a step-by-step guide. I just need to get an idea of what kind of part I’m looking for, or if we’re at the “junk it, it’s a desktop now” phase.
I was able to tighten mine (a Dell) by removing the pad on the lower corner of the screen and tightening the screw that was underneath. You might not be so lucky with yours but it’s worth a try.
hinges sometimes are a breeze, sometimes they require damn near completely disassembling the machine. I have never done this particular model so im not sure.
Hinges are generally not repairable IME, only replaceable.
Sometimes you need to replace the hinges… sometimes just tighten some screws. The bezel along the top of the keyboard of some laptops pops right out (at least, a bunch of the ones I’ve seen disassembled at work). In that case, you may be able to tighten something easily that way.
Otherwise, there’s this video of someone taking one apart, with bonus rock music.
