How to Get Rid of a Nine-foot Table in Brooklyn? (Seeking Advice)

Kayla has been living in a 4BR walk-up in Brooklyn since August 2019. Last July, two of her co-tenants declined to renew their leases and moved out, leaving behind a nine-foot long, nine-year old dining table and chairs that take up far too much of the common space (they had moved in before she did, and bought it off Facebook).

This past week she learned that her last remaining co-tenant is moving out this Thursday, and is NOT bringing the table with him. So this is her chance to ditch the set, and acquire both a more appropriate table AND a couch. But she has no idea how to get the table hauled away (or how to get a second-hand couch delivered).

(NOTE: she specifically asked me to include this part) If there are any Dopers in the Crown Heights area with a truck and an interest in picking up a few bucks, she could sure use a hand.

If not, any assistance with finding out how to economically hire a service to handle this sort of thing in Brooklyn, would sure be appreciated.

TIA

P.S. if anyone knows someone interested in obtaining housing in Brooklyn (second-floor walk-up, 3BR available), that would also be great.

P.P.S. Mods, I’m a bit unclear about where to put this. I’m eligible to use Marketplace, but something more high-traffic strikes me as preferable. Still, if that’s the best forum, go ahead and move it with no objections from me.

Still not sure how she’s going to handle the table, but she just ordered a couch. Anybody know the standard tip for a furniture delivery guy?

Typically, the table would be disassembled to get rid of it. Legs usually unbolt and the top is hopefully more than 1 piece and can be taken out in several pieces.

We have very little to go on though. a picture of the table would help.

What would happen if she just left the table there?

She wouldn’t be able to fit the couch in the common area.

Ah, I misunderstood, I thought she was leaving the place along with the others.

Good idea.

How? I have a photo on Flickr.

Guess it’s closer to seven feet, but still.

Kayla inspected it from below, and it appears to have been designed with a leaf, but there isn’t one.

I am assuming she’s looking to dispose of it, as hauling it away wouldn’t be her problem if she sold it. Getting it out of the apartment is one thing- but she doesn’t need to get it hauled away. She needs to make an appointment for bulk pickup- and chances are good that it will be gone before it gets picked up.

As for getting it out, surely the legs come off it somehow. Even if she needs to get a saw and cut them off. At least then even though it’s big, it’ll be a lot easier to move around (or move against a wall and out of the way to make space for the new table and couch.
She may want to call whoever is delivering the new furniture and see about having them hauling it away. She’s going to have two guys with experience moving furniture and a big truck right there. Even if she has to give them $50 bucks, it’ll be a lot easier than virtually any other alternative.

Lastly, put it on craigslist or FB Marketplace. Either free or cheap ( it looks like a nice table, with chairs, maybe 100 bucks), with the caveat that the buyer MUST arrange to get it out of her apartment and haul it away on their own. Make it very clear, mention it more than once, that they must get it out of her apartment on their own…she’ll still get people asking if she can help get it down to the street or if she can deliver it, but you’re making it cheap/free because of the inconvenience.

But seriously, ask the people that are delivering.

Whew, at 9 ft I was going to suggest a sawzall for the table top. Looking at the pic and further description, she can roll it over onto its top, legs are most likely held on with either a 9/16 nut or a 7/32 hex drive(alan wrench) screw or a 7/16 bolt. If she wants to disassemble it completely the glide rails for opening and inserting a leaf are probably held on with phillips head screws. If she can’t get anyone to help her take it out. Once the top is split in two the halves should be pretty easy to handle for her.

That table should disassemble pretty easy. Flip it over

The table top should be connected via sliders from the look of it. Usually it is a lot of screws holding the sliders to the bottom of the table. Remove the screws.

The legs will have some sort of fasteners holding them on. These should be easier to remove.

Optionally, offer the table cheap on Craigslist and include in the listing Cash Only. Make it cheap enough that someone will want to come and take it. Maybe even $20, no more than $50.

Actually, her first choice would be to sell it on the same apartment decorating site where she’s acquiring the couch, but she hasn’t had any interest shown. Next would be donating it to a thrift store but she’s having trouble arranging a pick up.

I should probably mention that she doesn’t have any tools.

Get her a basic tool set.

Even a cheapy little set like this would be enough to take a table apart and do some basic stuff.

Put it outside at sundown with a $200 price tag on it? It should be gone by morning.

Sounds like she doesn’t have the ability to get it out of the building. Though I could be wrong.

I’ve gotten rid of some unlikely things on Craigslist’s free stuff. Like a stained full size futon mattress – a guy came by with his English mastiff in his truck, to pick up the new dog bed. I have no doubt that putting it on either Facebook or Craigslist for free would have it gone quickly in Brooklyn.

I do second the recommendation of getting her a basic tool kit, though I’d suggest getting a decent quality one.

make sure it has a screw gun if you do. I still swear by the chicago electric brand one I bought at harbor freight years ago. I abused that thing for years and the charging base went kaput first.(ok I abused the charger too and frayed the wire to the point of danger). It was cheap, tough, light and low power enough to use on furniture hardware and powerful enough to twist heads off screws if you really really wanted to
