How to get the stink out of the roller hockey gear

I’m looking for opinions and/or helpful suggestions as to get hockey stink out of roller hockey goalie gear. I foolishly neglected to keep up the airing out and unstinking of the gear, so now I am paying the price. The season is over, so I’m going to get the smell out the best I can.

Any past experiences from Dopers out there or home remedies that can help me out?

I’m going to start with soaking my gear in the tub with cold water and baking soda, lots of baking soda.
I can say that Febreeze does NOT work in the least.

Any help is most appreciated!!

This site looks helpful.

Throw your stuff in the bathtub with some color safe bleach and laundry detergent and let it soak. Rinse well. Hang the equipment to dry, preferrably outside on a sunny day. If you can’t do that, try a hair dryer. Don’t just hang it in the basement or garage or it will mildew.

Once you get the odor out, keep it out. Always hang your equipment immediately after every game. You should consider building a hockey tree.

You can also try soaking it in a vinegar solution (1 cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon warm water). This also works great on cat urine. You wouldn’t happen to want a cat with a bladder problem, would you??

Many thanks,
I think when I go home for the end of the semester (one week!) that I’m going to try the bathtub and detergent idea and hope that it works out the best. I realize that it’s December and cold, but I will surely let it dry outside rather than inside. Thanks again for the ideas.
