how to ignore a poster

There is a userscript that purports to address both of these issues. I haven’t tried it, though, and I vaguely recall someone saying that it doesn’t work anymore. Is anyone using it?

I’ve resorted to mentally ignoring some posters. Since reading China Mieville’s The City & the City,* I’ve tried to make better use of my brain’s ignore feature.

*SF novel about two cities that occupy the same physical space; the residents of each city train themselves to ignore the people, buildings, etc. of the other city.

I find ignoring users difficult, because my eyes are trained to find the most interesting content on the page, and the name of the user is not the most interesting part.

I also find the ignored post notice fairly easy to ignore, given how it sets itself up to be unimportant. I have to intentionally pay attention to the name.

And, with all due respect, if anyone is an expert at using the Ignore list, it’s you. But I’m glad you decided to give more of us a second chance, and I applaud you for trying to keep an open mind about those of us who disagree with you politically.

If you’re accessing the SDMB via Tapatalk, the Ignore function works perfectly. It hides the post completely, and doesn’t give the message “This post is hidden because you have placed the Poster on Ignore.”

Then all you have to worry about is someone quoting the ignored person.

Gotcha … hahahahaha … now everybody has to read what Northern Piper posted …

The reason to put someone on your ignore list is 1] You disagree with them and 2] they’re smarter than you … in a sense, being ignored is the highest compliment … could someone please quote me so all the stupid posters can read this? …

I tend to find that while I can easily scroll past a post from someone whose opinion I disdain, putting them on Ignore just makes me want to read the post to see what’s been blocked.

Except Permanent ignore.

Since the Great Purge, I’ve had to add two people back onto the list. But that was simply because they were raging assholes, not because of political differences.

No. The main reason to put someone on ignore is because they are acting like a total asshole and show no sign of stopping.

Fair enough. But I still applaud the effort to engage at least some of us more midline assholes. Myself included

This message is hidden because kayaker is on your ignore list.

This post has been ignored by The Ignorist.

I’ll quote you, but only to tell you that this is ridiculous. Being ignored means the person thinks what you have to say will not in any way impact their ability to read and understand the conversation, or may even improve it.

I assume discussing my way of determining who fits that criteria would get too close to saying who is on my ignore list. But this board is much better with those people hidden away. My blood pressure is much better because of it.

I will say it’s not a political list.

Shouldn’t that be Ignoramus?

[Nothing personal, just a joke.]

The should be an entire Snowflake Control Panel that not only lets you block posts but also converts mean words into kitten or puppy.

I frequent a message board where many words are automatically converted because of the ads they trigger. It’s very annoying. For example, my cousin Dick becomes cousin Whingadingdingy.

I would use that.

Bug? What bug? That’s only a bug in the same sense that it’s a bug in vBulletin that it doesn’t automatically send Scarlet Johannsen over to my apartment to give me back rubs (and frankly, I consider that one to be a much higher priority). How, exactly, is the software supposed to block quotes?

Oh, can I do the Learjet part, please?

Just for fun, I installed that userscript (SDMB Ignore List Plus). It appears to work exactly as described. Add a name to the ignore list (the script’s list, not the SDMB User CP ignore list) and it hides (1) posts by that person, (2) posts that quote that person (provided that the quote is properly formatted), and (3) threads started by that person.

I don’t intend to use it beyond testing it, though. I don’t ignore anyone, because if people annoy me, I want to be able to make fun of them in the Pit. How can I do that if I can’t see their posts?
