Do you "Ignore" other posters? ** NO NAMES **

So no names please, and no clever dance arounds like “That semi-orphaned Spaniard”. I’m interested in YOUR half of the ignore thought process.

After much inner deliberation I just “ignored” a poster. This brings my list of ignored posters to a whopping total of: One

I did have two others. One ended up being banned a few days later (I don’t take credit for that), the other I unignored after a few months–they hit a trigger that wrecked me for a week. I got over it, put a fresh piece of hide over the injury, and unignored them. And I’m glad I did because although while still abrasive the poster has since afforded a couple good chuckles. All good, the problem was me.

So hopefully I’ve set this one up properly to avoid an immediate lock, but we’ll see. My questions are:

  • Do you use the ignore function?
    (Me: Extremely rarely)

  • If yes, do you use it a lot? Do you periodically “review” your list and unignore posters?
    (Me: No, Yes)

  • What typically prompts you to ignore someone?
(Me: posts that lead to unmanageable symptoms in The Real World)

Personally, I shy away from it because even if I don’t care for your opinions or posting style, I can sometime get some insight from other posters’ reactions. And sometimes you might make me think about something in a way I normally wouldn’t–and I’m all about peeking at other peoples’ brains when I can.

Nope.

I haven’t found a reason to ignore another poster.

I agree it’s interesting to read ideas that conflict with my own. See the opposite view of a topic.

That’s one of the main reasons to come here.

Nope, I can scroll pretty fast.

I don’t ignore anyone. If I don’t like what they post, I just avoid their stuff.

I have ignored one. I just did it within the past week or so. Nothing serious, just got tired of seeing their incoherent, long, repetitive, pointless and rather frequent posts.

I had to actually check in the user control panel–but nope, I don’t have anyone listed.

I ignore two. Sexist posts are what did it for me.

No, but I often skip “wall o’text” posts.

Nope. This place is moderated well enough I have not felt the need. I can dislike and disagree with someone and feel no need to ignore, as long as they are relatively civil. The moderation here keeps that at a reasonable level.

My IMDB ignore list was a mile long.

I have 2 on the ignore list.

Only one, and that’s because their writing and punctuation style just drove me round the bend.

Nope, far too nosy.

There are currently 12 people on my Ignore List. All of them are there for either Nazism, racism or unrepentant asshattery. The list gets reviewed every now and then to drop the ones who got banned.

I have four. A couple of them do not appear to be active members these days. Though their politics and posting styles differ, the thing they all have in common is a smug certainty of themselves as good people. Maybe it is the residue of a Catholic education, but people who are too certain of their own righteousness engender irritation and mistrust in my heart.

Nope. The posts presenting ideas I disagree with are the ones I most ought to read. No point trying to live in a bubble.

No. I prefer to have simple access to the entire context within a discussion.

I seldom use it; I have four people there, two of which are banned. One of the banned I recall nothing about; the other was an advocate for child molestation who also showed up on another board and swiftly got banned there too.

The two unbanned ones I find irritating enough that I don’t want to see anything they say.

I’m thinking the “ignore” function is for people who want to ignore someone but, upon seeing that the individual in question posted to an issue, just can’t resist reading that post and probably upsetting themselves further.

I actually use the “ignore” function when at the market. I have the bakery section on “ignore” because I don’t have the willpower to ignore the stuff if I bring it home. LOL

I’ve just got one person on my Ignore list, and this person got there for being dumb as a post while being a prolific poster.
