Not in the press-the-ignore-option sense although there are a few I almost never read.
I don’t, I don’t take the boards seriously enough to need to unsee people here. I like arguing, and sometimes just rolling my eyes at idiots without saying anything, but none of it especially bothers me. The one time I got in a weird rut where I kept getting actually angry at someone’s posts I took a break from the board for a week or so, since it was out of character for me. Usually I use ignore/block functions for people that message me privately and annoy me (which doesn’t happen here), or for people who I don’t like IRL on a site linked to my live presence (like Facebook).
Nope nobody on ignore though there are a couple of posters that if I see they are the OP I won’t open their threads.
I don’t ignore. I’ll talk with anybody, unless they’re boring me. I like debate, even argumentative debate, so it all works out.
Ignore a lot of posters. But I don’t use the ignore feature because I know how not to read something.
Nope. Most of my activity is in the Game Room or Elections. While I know there are Dopers who I strongly disagree with, that’s no reason to ‘ignore’ them. The moderation on this board is decent, so someone who regularly threadshits or hijacks threads is usually suspended or banned.
We all know that political discussions, the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Designated Hitter, or interleague play are going to generate a lot of strong discussion. It would be silly of me to ‘ignore’ someone even though I already know we won’t agree on a subject.
No, It would not occur to me to put someone on ignore in the first place, and if they are being an ass I want to see them flame out before they are shown the door. But more importantly, I don’t usually pay enough attention to who is writing the posts. I read threads that interest me, but am not too concerned about who did the writing.
See, that’s the reason I put the one person on ignore. It had nothing to do with disagreement, but boredom. I read threads on my phone a lot, and this specific poster is really long winded and prolific and never added even a whit to the discussion. I ignored so I wouldn’t waste so much time scrolling.
No. I am here at my own disgression. I will read anybody once. If I don’t like, I scroll past next time.
How does the site’s “ignore” feature work? If I “ignore” another poster, do only the contents of their post become invisible? Or does their entire post disappear, so that I have no idea they even posted? Do quotes of their post (contained in other members’ posts) also disappear?
I ignore people when:
- Their posts are consistently terrible and never or almost never offer anything of value
- Their posts consistently infuriate me to the point where I cannot rationally respond to them
- They’re obviously trolls
In short, my ban list includes almost exclusively people with severe mental problems and people who I think should be banned.
it’s annoying you see their name and a friendly reminder that their text is hidden because you’re ignoring them.
Apparently I coined a new word: I meant discretion not disgression which is not a word.
Yes and No.
Yes, sort of, because they are just names on a computer screen.
HOWEVER, no, this is not talking to an Alexis. Those are REAL people behind those names whom I really can get good information and learn alot from. I love when people with all kinds of backgrounds and from all over the globe weigh in on an issue.

Do you use the ignore function?
No, never. -
If yes, do you use it a lot? Do you periodically “review” your list and unignore posters?
-
What typically prompts you to ignore someone?
There are people who are offensive or obnoxious, and that’s the way the world is. I don’t want to bury my head in the sand and pretend they don’t exist. That doesn’t mean I have to read all their posts either, so sometimes I just ignore them in the true sense of the word rather than the “ignore button” meaning. (I don’t skip posts just because they disagree with me; I’ve learned more from people who disagree with me than those who agree.)
Never felt the need, so nope, nobody.
Disgression is TOTALLY a word now. Its a good one. Discretionary digression.
It’s been about ten years, but I think I put someone on the list for having what seemed like a crappy attitude towards other users. If I recall correctly, I took them off the list because the minimized posts were more irritating than just ignoring the text.
That sums up my position, although I probably don’t skip over posts by a lot of members. Maybe a dozen or so, but not a lot.
I find it amusing that the only person I have on my ignore list posted in this thread.
