I’ve heard it thrown about, how some people might have other members on their ignore list. I’ve been either lurking on the Dope or actively posting here for over seven years now, and while I’ve seen my fair share of assholes and nutjobs, I’ve never even come close to the point where I thought I needed to Ignore someone’s posts.
The only reason I can see to use this feature is if someone is stalking me, and it’s getting a tad creepy. But this place doesn’t seem like it’s got that kind of problem. Does it?
What have you used the Ignore feature for?
*disclaimer: It’s against the rules to disclose who is on your ignore list… so don’t.
I don’t. No matter how annoying someone gets, they still might have a good insight on a subject that is not their problem area and it is far too easy to just glance over a post.
Lets say poster A regularly makes offensive statements about something I believe strongly in. This same poster might also be an expert on making widgets.
It would be silly for me ignore them.
Jim (I think I left everything vague enough where no one could take offense)
I would never dream of using it. Seems to me like it would make it impossible for to follow a thread. Besides, if you can’t enjoy the follies of your fellow members, what’s the use of living?
Yes, my sentiments exactly. Let’s say a certain poster consistently offends you (and not necessarily on a personal basis). I find that choosing to ignore them would be immature and actually counter the motto of this place. We’re supposed to be fighting ignorance, not actively participating in it!
I do for one doper. A messed-up, basement-dwelling headcase with absolutely nothing worthwhile to contribute either on the boards or in real life, IMHO.
He’s the only one, though. I agree that pretty much every other poster has something valuable to contribute, even the ones I don’t get along with. Just . . . not that guy.
Also, if you put someone on ignore then instead of seeing their posts, you see a box that says: “Poster X is on your ignore list. Click here to see their post.” My curiosity compels me to click and I might as well not even use the ignore feature. So I don’t.
So, Linty, I’m nothing more than curious. Was it anything they did specifically that put you over, or was it just a long laundry list of idiocy from that member that made you decide to blacklist 'em? Also, do you know when they post something, but nothing appears within their post, or are they just :: poof :: gone?
ETA: Nevermind about that last part… thanks Inner Stickler.
I don’t have anyone on my ignore list. I don’t even get how it works. Would that mean that person’s posts wouldn’t appear? What about posts replying to those invisible posts? I would feel totally out of the loop in the conversation, if that were the case, and would not desire that. Besides, I really don’t hate anyone on this board enough to use it.
Well, that’s a problem right there. Makes the whole ignore thing kind of moot. I tend to think only the most incendiary of posters would be the ones quoted more, just out of pure vitriol.
(my apologies to anyone who’s chosen to ignore TroubleAgain)
It was a laundry list. I read about eight or nine of his posts and realized that whoever was going to solve the world’s problems by the end of next week, it wasn’t going to be him. Why waste my time getting aggravated over something that comes out of his head?
And I know when he posts something. It’s just that I see the whole “He’s on ignore” thing where his post would be. I’m not even really curious about what he has to say.
I also have one poster on ignore though when someone responds to something he’s written, I do, sometimes, go back and read his posts. They are just unpleasant, probably not quite trolling posts that I don’t care to read.
I have an internal ignore list. There is a short list of people that I will mostly skip over if I see their posts in a thread I am interested in. Sometimes I read it, sometimes I don’t. I will never reply to someone on my ignore list. I will never use the actual ignore function available on the board.
I have used it once I believe - for a poster who ended up getting banned a long time ago. Now, I just don’t have the energy anymore to get that upset with other posters, and like Inner Stickler said, I would probably just end up reading it anyway.
Yes, I use the ignore list, and yes, I’ve found that it enhances my SDMB experience. (Some people are prolific, repetitive, and annoying.) Admins, don’t ever take it away!
