Telling people you are putting them on ignore

Recently there has been a poster who has repeatedly told people he was putting them on ignore. My question…isn’t there a rule or something against this? I seem to recall mods telling posters that this wasn’t kosher in the past. Am I misremembering or has there been a rule change?

Wish I could read this post.

:stuck_out_tongue:

It’s OK in the Pit. Elsewhere, no, it’s not allowed.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I vaguely remembered that there was a mod post on this before and I was curious.

The rule was changed some time ago. Before it was prohibited to reveal who was on your ignore list in any forum. Now it is permitted in the Pit, but still against the rules in other forums. The idea is that since saying that someone is on your ignore list is basically an insult, it should be treated as other insults.

Well, I don’t think putting someone on ignore and telling them about it is so much an insult as a really stupid thing to do, but I can see why you guys modified the rules to allow it in the Pit. Makes sense to me.

I believe that the reason for prohibiting it in the Pit was not so much that it was an insult, but that it was a really really lame insult.

Neener neener!! I can’t read you.

That’s it exactly.

If I don’t want to read some posters posts (though, to be honest, I usually do, if only for the comic value) I, well, don’t read them. Is there some mechanism by which the board holds you hostage and forces you to read? Or does the scroll button not work on some folks browsers?

OK - here’s a dumb question, what does the ignore function actually do?

Blocks any post made by that user, and prevents them from PM’ing you.

I’ve never used it on the SD, but on other boards I’ve used it in the past to cut out spammers. Basically, it removes their posts from what you see. You can still see someone else quoting them, but you won’t see their posts at all.

Don’t know how it works here on the SD though…might be different.

We get rid of spammers the old-fashioned way: we nuke 'em from orbit.

Right. I’ve never used it (and it’s disabled for mods and admins), but when you scroll to a post made by someone you have ignored, you get a message that says something like ‘This is post was made by someone on your ignore list. Would you like to view it?’ You can click a button if you want to read the post, otherwise you won’t see it. You can still see that person’s posts, or parts of them, if someone else quotes them.

Let me get this straight. I don’t “ignore”, but lets say one night me and the dog get drunk, and I put 40 blithering assholes on my ignore list. And then forget about it. And then lets say one of them starts a Pit thread “Venting My Bitter Jealousy of Elucidator’s Wit, Erudition, and Personal Magnetism”. And all forty of them come tumbling into the thread to vent their spleens. And nobody else participated.

If I opened the thread I wouldn’t see anything? Would I even see the thread, if it were started by a person I’m ignoring?

And if I ignore them, shouldn’t I be able to make them ignore me? They get all the benefit of my crystalline intelligence? What a gyp!

Posts by someone on your ignored list have their contents replaced by the text
*
This message is hidden because **** is on your ignore list. *

Where the post number would normally be is an option to View Post. Where the join date would normally be is a link to Remove user from ignore list. The poster’s name is in a smaller font than usual and you can’t see their title (Guest, Member, etc). Otherwise, everything looks the same.

As long as I’m putting my ignorance on display, is there any way to tell who has you on their ignore list?

No. That’s why there’s a “don’t tell people they’re on your ignore list outside the Pit” rule.
