OK, for the first time since I started lurking here I have discovered a poster worthy of the ignore list. No small feet, that. Is the ban on mentioning this, or suggesting that other posters use this feature with regard to the ignoree, still in effect? I know we are allowed to call someone a troll now and was wondering if the ignore rule had changed as well.
I am aware that there is still mention of the rule in certain stickies but was wondering if it was perhaps outdated.
Are you hinting that the person on your ignore list has extra-large lower extremities? That narrows it down considerably. By Jove, I think I’ve got it! Say no more.
Why would you want to mention you’ve put someone on ignore? It’s not as if you’re going to see their heartfelt repentance in response to being shut out of your presence.
And why would you want to suggest others ignore someone? If they’re worth ignoring, the others will know about it, and/or won’t care.
And see, I’m sure this is probably just me, but I wouldn’t mind knowing whose ignore list I was on at all. That way, if there was perhaps some problem, I could fix it… apologize, clarify or correct. Regardless, there’d be a side benefit too. If they weren’t giving me the time of day, no point in wasting pixels in responding to anything they’ve said. They’d only be listening to others and I’d languish away in non-existence, not understanding why they wouldn’t talk back (ha!) to me. That makes one weepy, yanno?
I have been wanting to start a thread on this for a while, but this sounds like a perfectly good place to ask this: What’s the point of ignores?
When you ignore someone you just don’t see their posts, right? Do you see the threads they start? Do you see when others quote him? It sounds like trying to read a book without one letter. More of a handicap than a convenience.
Do people really use ignores? Could I start a poll about ignore use? Who uses it, how many ignores you have. etc? (without mentioning names, of course)
I am really failing to see how this is a usabe, useful feature.
I don’t use it - but I did ignore someone a while back just to answer those questions. If you must see for yourself, ignore flight. Then go to the ATMB main page and see if you can see his thread. Also - he’s been quoted in this thread, so you can see that you can still view stuff he posted that’s been quoted.
Also - it’s hilariously easy to remove someone from your ignore list. There’s a big “Remove this user from your ignore list” on every single post they make.
I may or may have not put someone who may or may have not started this thread on ignore to check how ignores work (and when I finished, I removed **flight ** from my ignore list).
It is even worse than I though! Not only you don’t see their posts but you see that they posted. Total hell. I could see my nemesis all day but not know what he is saying [about me].
Now I really need to start an IMHO thread polling about the use of this, er, feature. Can I get a green light from a Mod, please?
Sapo, the reason you can see that whoever posted is in case you’d like to view that specific post anyway. Say you’re following along in a discussion and it’s integral to keep up with who said what and their views. But if you know for a fact that you can’t ever make heads nor tails (or even stand) their opinion on yellow purple people eaters, you can ignore any thing they write of itself or in a thread.
I’ve been known to use it, but mostly to keep my blood pressure down regarding a banned member or two whose only reason, apparently, for being here, was to advance their one-trick-ponyism. Not really necessary once I saw their name, but for me, it helped in resisting temptation.
There was a recent thread on this, though I am not sure if it was in IMHO or here. Either way the general consensus was that it sucked and there wasn’t any good reason to use it.
I thought the same, and only recently realized that there may actually be an occasion to use it. That was when someone was so willfully ignorant and intentionally annoying that I realized I would rather miss a good portion of a thread than have to look at what they wrote. It removes the temptation of responding, which would be futile. In fact, the individual was annoying enough that I think other posters may have been interested in using the ignore feature on them if the the thought had occurred to them.
Larry Borgia, thanks, now I can remain ignore free.
To several people: I had no intention of gloating, or of even telling the person, who I am sure is unaware of my existence. As the feature is so rarely used I thought that many people would not have thought of it as an option and would appreciate the suggestion.
I thought of another potential use. I often only note the poster after having read the post. The ignore feature removes the necessity of inadvertently stepping in some mental feces by not noting who the poster was.
You can’t necessarily believe someone who notifies you by PM or by email that he has put you on his ignore list. One of my non-admirers sent me a snotty message saying that he was officially Ignoring me, and yet he still seemed to see my subsequent posts, since he continued to complain about them!
that’s very true. I have fallen for that a couple of times. Ticks me like all get out.
Frank, thanks for the link. It IS recent. I can’t believe I missed that thread going for 2 pages on a topic I was curious about. (and I swear that not everyone on that thread is on my ignore list )
