Is there a way to access IBB’s without having your IP logged correctly?
Why would you care, unless you were planning on doing something illegal?
I guess that’s yes -
next question: How do I do it?
You can use an anonymous proxy.
You want us to aid your illegal activities? yeah, right.
So let me get this straight, you are planning to do something illegal, and you want people to tell you how to do it?
Just what kind of message board do you think this is?
Is that like a website, like google or something? Or freeware?
You can use Google or any other search engine to get more information about it.
Why does everyone assume that nisobar is planning on doing something illegal? There are plenty of reasons to want to keep your IP concealed that have nothing to do with breaking the law. Keeping script kiddies from launching lame (but often effective) attacks against your machine is one.
I think this board’s resistance to talking about the topic is because the adminstrators here are pretty serious about wanting to know who you are and will immediately ban anyone they discover to be using a proxy server to conceal their true IP. So, in derference to the mods and the board I won’t answer the question here. But if anyone wants to know the basics, feel free to e-mail me at mike@bleeding-head.com. I won’t give any pointers to specific proxy servers but I’d be happy to talk about the concept and how it’s generally implemented.
Thanks, will do, pestie!
Hiding your IP is not illegal, nor is it any more immoral than using PGP or passwording your Word documents. And since IPs are not privledged/confidential information (contrary to what trolls think), you have every right to hide it if you wish.
Anyone who has a NAT box, Linksys Router, or posts from a corporation likely has their real IP address “hidden” anyhow. Or if they come from AOL. You can only trace back so far, and then everything vanishes, and without the cooperation of the proxy owner, you’re often SOL.
Of course, a message board has every right to prohibit membership if you use an anonymous proxy too. I believe Lynn posted in the past that she did not want people using anonymous proxies to browse the SDMB, for example.
Yes, she definitely did. There are anonymous proxy websites – fewer and fewer free ones, though – that request pages on your behalf using their own IP address(es). However, if you use those bear in mind (i) some websites will refuse you entry, or ban your account (such as this one), (ii) if you’re at work, your employer may track such site use and come down hard on you (since they can see you spending a lot of time accessing an anonymiser service), and (iii) you are relying on the integrity of those websites themselves. Even the best known anonymiser websites have admitted retaining logs of their subscribers’ activities, and in the UK at least government regulation may require them to keep logs.
We do not permit discussion of how to hide your IP number here. This thread is closed.
