So I’m incredibly inexperienced and stupid when it comes to computer stuff, but I have the following question.
I get my internet using NetZero. Being the pessimist that I am, I expect someday my computer to shoot craps and I’ll have to get a new one. I’d like to keep NetZero since I’ve paid for it. How would I go about getting my new computer to get the internet and NetZero. My wife first told me, when that happens just get on the internet and download the netzero software like I did previously. That can’t work, because I would need the internet access first in order to get internet access.
I thought, I’d e-mail my netzero folders and files to my work account where I can burn them on a CD then keep the CD handy for the new computer. Would this work, Or is there an easier way? Should I find and remember (write down) the dial-up numbers then with the new computer “somehow” put those numbers in some special place on a dial up program that I’ll have to find. For those interested, I first got internet access through the school I was at, then used it to get hooked up to NetZero just in time for the school to cut me off…hence I WAS able to use the internet to get the internet.
Almost any new computer you buy will come with software, and a 30 day free trial of AOL, MSN, or both.
Sign up for the free trial with one of them, get online, reinstall your NetZero software, and cancel your free trial membership afterword.
Warning: cancelling these things is a much bigger hassle than signing up for them… be prepared to sit on hold for a while, I was unable to cancel by email, I had to call in person.
Thanks for the fast reply, that’s what I thought I might have to do. But I’m an apprentice “grumpy old man” and would like to avoid the hassle of dealing with removing myself from AOL etc. (ironically, I’d prefer the hassle of avoiding them, even if it becomes bigger than just dealing with AOL,…it’s the budding curmudgeon in me).
So, even though what you suggest would work (and is essentially what I did originally) is there a easy way to avoid the other providers…and would my idea of keeping my NetZero files on disk work (assuming I could actually get them e-mailed and burned on a CD)
Yes, you can save and copy over the files, if you can identify them and store them in the same directory path.
I did what Rushgeekgirl suggested, ordered a CD. In 2 weeks it hadn’t arrived, so I signed up with MSN. and the CD never did arrive.

By the way, I had Netzero “Unlimited”, and upgraded to Netzero Platinum when Netzero went to 10 hours a month. Within 90 days THEY cancelled my Platinum account, presumably because I was on for long hours and didn’t buy stuff from their vendors. The did allow me, however, to downgrade back to a FREE 10 hour/month membership. VERY strange that they would prefer nothing from me rather than $9.95 per month.
This might work better. Click on the “?” button on your “ZeroPort.” This should take you to the customer help page. Under “Getting Started” click on the “get started” link which will take you to another menu. In that Getting Started menu click on the “Download Software” link. This will give you all the details for downloading everything onto a floppy disk. (I think it actually takes 4 disks.) This way you have a backup if you switch computers.
(I’m surprized to hear everyone’s having problems getting NZ CDs. Maybe they should hire some people from AOL. )
