How to kill ants organically?

Ant beds all in the yard, help me out here.

What do you consider organic? Arsenic is organic, as is benzene, but you probably don’t want to pour either on your lawn. Some people use boiling water. At least you could make a nice cuppa with the leftovers.

You could step on 'em.

Neither arsenic nor boiling water is organic, but cyanide, strychnine, and ricin are.

One homemade solution is to put a few drops of dishwashing soap in a watering can and pour the sudsy water on them. I’ve had mixed results with this, but it’s super cheap and has actually worked at least once. May need repeated treatments, and it doesn’t hurt the grass.

the poison bait material containing borate is not hazardous or toxic to people or large animals. you could cover the nest with a box during treatment so that other insect sized animals are not affected if it would be toxic to them.

Sometimes pouring vinegar over the mound will get rid of them. However, IME diatomaceous earth will work better. It kills any insects, beneficial and otherwise, but it’s otherwise perfectly safe.

We’ve used diatomaceous earth with success.

Or what purplehorseshoe said while I was reading the Wiki site

the borate baits have sugar as the attractant, ants will find at a distance and aim for it and take the toxic back to share with the nest.

diatomaceous earth works by coming in contact with an individual insect. if you mix a sugar attractant with it then it is more effective.

I found a nice sunny day and a magnifying glass works like a charm, although it is a little labor intensive.

Seconded. Plus, you totally feel like Godzilla.

When I was a kid I would stomp around on ant nests, flood them, etc.

But then I would very vividly imagine my destructive antics being on the “Ant News” - I’d picture families of ants gathered around their tiny little TVs, watching reports of some giant monster wreaking havoc on a nearby colony, devastating floods at another colony, etc. The President of the Ants would go on TV, and appeal for calm.

I was a weird kid.

Malt-O-Meal or cornmeal.

“They eat it and it swells up in their stomachs and makes them explode!!”

It does seem to make that particular ant colony go away, but I think there are ants that survive that start another colony.

Can we see some evidence for this claim? It sounds like a miniaturised version of the “pigeons explode when they eat rice” myth.

If by “organic” you mean poisonous to the smallest range of other things, mix sugar with something that cements when it gets wet. Borax, cornflour, cement powder all work fairly well. Borax is a poison as well though. The mechanism isn’t poisoning the ants, its destroying the ability of the hive to function, which hopefully stops them breeding (at least until a new colony is established, but any method has that limitation).

So cement powder and borax are organic, but DDT isn’t?:dubious:

Two things to remember DE doesn’t work once it gets wet, and the second thing is DE works on ALL insects. So if you like have honeybees or ladybugs you don’t want to kill DE will work on them as well

You can find peppermint oil spray which works on most insects. It comes in different strengths depending on the insects you want to kill. We used it on ants we had indoors, it made the whole house smell like candy-canes for weeks.

I found it at a local ACE hardware, I’ve never seen it at either Home Depot, or Lowes, but you could check.

Try asking the folks on AntBlog, they answer all kinds of questions over there.

I have used borax with good results on ants. Wiped out a red headed ant hill with half a box of the stuff.
