I read all the FAQs to no result. Man, I’ve wasted a whole day trying to set up some website where I can post a bunch of pics, so can put the URL in a link and readers can see the shots. I got one up with my ISP, but nobody else can go there, even though I made it “public.”
I setup, without any luck, Yahoo Photos, ImageShack, and PhotoBucket, but when I put the link to their the URLs to get there, it seems nobody else can see them, at least not without a password.
Yet I see a lot of posters who put in a link, and when click on it, see a nice, full-screen photo. How the heck do they **do **that?
Is there any way to link directly to a photo on my HDD? If not, where can I put some so others can see 'em?
I’m sure it’s simple, so willing to put on my Dunce Cap if somebody can explain in simple English (or basic Latin :)) how to do this.
It is possible; you’d have to set your machine up as a web server. I really don’t recommend this for you because:
-It’s not convenient - turn off your machine and the image is inaccessible
-It will consume your bandwidth - every time someone’s browser requests the picture, your machine will serve it up to them using your internet connection.
-It’s not secure - I genuinely mean no offence by this, but if you’re asking these questions, you won’t have the expertise to set up a secure web server and it either won’t work, or it will work, but at the expense of rendering your machine vulnerable to attack.
I’ve heard good things about Flickr, which I think will do everything you want.
I went here because it didn’t require you to sign up or anything. As long as the file size is under 250kB. If it isn’t, try using whatever program you opened the file with to “Save As” and see if it’s a JPEG, if not, save it as a JPEG; if it is already a JPEG see if gives any compression options. Best of luck.
Many thanks for that simple tweak. Did it, so will see if that works. Can you go to my cats at PhotoBucket and see if it works, as does Flicker now? Got to scroll down a ways, then can hit “Slideshow.”
Now with all the help, I’ll end up with a whole slew of phot sites. Well, better than none!
You can cut photos and change their format using Irfanveiw. Maybe that was the problem? Here is a link to my Sony ImageStation album which has a (very) few pictures of my cats. I haven’t managed to get any pictures of the newest cat, Oscar (the grouch) yet. We think he most likely has some Maine Coon in him, the neighbor down the street had Maine Coons, that she let wander, so some of the cats around here have Maine Coon in them. (Jack passed away a couple of years ago, he was my In-law’s cat. Snowy and Tornado are both my In-law’s cats.) It’s not such a bad site, but can be a bit confusing if you are new to it. Try there and see if you can make sense of it and make an album. You can pull up my album without trouble, can’t you?
Not the answer to the problem here, but a helpful fact for others reading this:
Since I very rarely need to “mount an image on the Internet” and then only for a brief period, I use a Photobucket service called Tinypic http://www.tinypic.com/ An image smaller than 250K, or one you don’t mind having shrunk to below 250K, can be uploaded here very simply; the “browse” button allows you to pick a file off your own hard disk and then the “Host Picture” button loads it on their website, and generates a code you use for linking to it (four options for linking are generated at bottom of the screen, along with a thumbnail-size picture to validate you uploaded the right one). The numbers are recycled and remain valid for about six to eight weeks before being wiped. It’s completely free and doesn’t require setting up an account. If you’re someone like me who only needs to have an image hosted once every few months, it’s a simple way to take care of the problem.
No kidding ? No offense meant, I realize I didn’t actually type out the site I linked to and I now feel like a bit of a doofus. Still, just struck me as funny because it was such a recent post of mine.
No problem Polycarp and thanks for the reply. Also Zabali_Clawbane that cat is really, really stoned. "Duuude, what’s up with the black tablecloth? How much more black could it be? And the answer is ‘None more. None more black.’ "
Depending on who your ISP is, as part of your account you will usually be provided with several megs (or more) of web accessible storage space you can up load pics (or anything) into and then link to them as net accessible images. Many ISPs also provide a step by step “how to” instructions that show you how to upload these pics.
