Here’s the thing. Maybe I have some kinda fungus growing on one of my oleanders in the back yard. Maybe I want to start a GQ thread about it, but well, you kinda need to see it to identify it. How do I do something like that?
I’m hoping there’s an easy and free site I can link to in a post. Any ideas?
Imgur is about as easy as it gets. I don’t know which of the others can/can’t do this, but Imgur will allow you to link to a single picture without giving up your privacy.
For example, if you post a photobucket link, everyone can scroll through all your other pictures. With Imgur, you can link to that one picture, and it won’t even tell people your username.
Also, for a picture hosting site, it has a surprisingly good community.
Flickr used to provide a terabyte of storage for their free accounts, which they proudly announced by saying they were now “Biggr!”. But recently they reversed that and went back to the old limit of one thousand images. Now they are “Smallr!”, though they didn’t put it that way. Still, if you don’t think you’ll need to store more than a thousand images you’ll be fine. And the paid services isn’t very expensive if you find you need to upgrade.
I don’t think you even have to set up an account on imgur. Just upload and get a link. They might delete it after awhile, I poked around for 30 secs and didn’t find anything about that.
You’re right, as I recall, you can upload a picture and get a link without an account. However, if you do that, the picture is essentially lost forever if you don’t hold on to the link.
Imgur, FWIW, was originally created simply to host pictures for people to post on reddit, so that may be part of why it’s set up like that.
But, you can set up an account and use it to store all your pictures, but also give people links to individual pictures without [directly] giving up any personal info.
Lost forever? Ummm… it’s still on your camera or device. Uploading is copying… unless I’m misunderstanding you? You mean you can’t access the link? So create an account. I have a yahoo address that I use for creating accounts like this. I’m stingy with my main email address.
As said already, imgur is the easiest. Get the imgur app on your phone and you can upload directly from your phone. Be mindful of whether you are posting to the imgur community or keeping your photos hidden–there is an option. The default is to share, so toggle that off, if you care. All of my pictures are hidden. The most boring and innocent picture will elicit tacky/snarky comments pretty quickly. Makes you feel like you’ve taped your pics to the wall in a frat house.
What I mean is that if I upload a picture to imgur without an account and give someone the link to it, then a year later I want to send the same picture to someone else, I’ve got to reupload it and get a new link, provided I didn’t save the previous one or feel like digging through my old emails to find it.
Yes, you can set up an account, but I was responding to UnwittingAmericans who stated that they didn’t think you had to.
I think there are some people (not you, obviously) who think that when you upload something, it disappears from their phone/computer and goes into the ether, never to be seen again. 'Cause computers, the interwebs, and shit like that is magic and doesn’t follow any rules that they [del]bother to try to[/del] comprehend.
