I am using a cheap, probably old Chromebook I bought online to use while my $1200 laptop is being repaired (under warranty > whew <)
Anyway, none of the ways I used to use to post photos on the SDMB are available to me-- I can seem to use Paint to make jpgs, and I can’t upload anything to Photobucket; I also can’t seem to use any of the apps my email offer, nor does the upload feature of SDMB allow me to upload directly from my email.
So I’m stuck.
I have pix on my Android phone, I have Messenger, Gmail and Google messages I can send the images to, and I can also upload to Photobucket (I haven’t used the account in years, but it is still there, I just revived it, and I remember getting it so I could upload to the SDMD, or maybe Fathom, one or the other).
Want to post pix of the new kitty, mainly because I’m supposed to, but also to ask a question from the vast experience out there on the board.
Any suggestions?
Off to work, but taking my laptop with me-- so won’t be checking in until afternoon.
I’m baffled. You don’t upload pix to SDMB. Nobody can. We never could. You upload pix to e.g. photobucket or Imgur or any other website that hosts pix for public viewing.
Then you post a link to that page here. Which we can click to see the pic. Or you post a link that is just the url of the picture itself, ending in jpg, png, etc. That kind of link becomes an inline preview so we can see the pic here in the thread.
If your chromebook has a browser, you can do this. And we know it has that since you posted this thread.
I have an acccount on Flickr. I wouldn’t recommend it. Content is accessible to search engines. Every month or so they send me an e-mail saying I need to remove ‘restricted’ content, upgrade to a paid account, or have my account deleted. Plus, you must sign in to Flickr to view ‘restricted’ content.
When I thought Flickr actually was going to delete my account, I found imgbox.com Images you upload are not accessible to search engines. Other users cannot search the images. The only way for other people to see your images is if you provide them a link.
And, some years ago, Photobucket also made it difficult, if not impossible, to hotlink photos uploaded there into other sites (like this one). That forced me to dump them, and switch to Imgur, as it’s one of the primary uses I have for uploading photos.
Yeah, some of the photos I’ve posted online are still visible, some are just blank/no image placeholders.
I still get several emails a week threatening to delete the account entirely if I don’t pony up.
As if the only copy of those photos are in the Photobucket account.
Photobucket still nudges me similarly, from time to time; I haven’t put anything new up on Photobucket in something like 8 or 9 years, and there’s nothing on that account that I care about at this point.
I forgot about them. The geniuses behind Photobcucket did not realize that people would be linking to their photos on social media sites and such. They could not handle the traffic. They demanded you upgrade to a paid account if you wanted to use Photobucket in that way. I made sure i had copies of all the images I had uploaded and abandoned my account. I never deleted it. Every now and then Photobucket sends me an e-mail telling me I need to upgrade to a paid account or my images will be deleted. I don’t care if they are deleted. The only reason I have not deleted them myself is that I hope keeping the files and sending the e-mails wastes some tiny amount of money for them. They proved to be useless. I want revenge.
I’ve been using Imgur for photo uploads. I even have an app on my iPhone to upload my images from my device if I take a photo I want to share online. (I very rarely do that but I have done it before.)
It seems to work well and it’s all free.
As others have said, once it’s online somewhere you can then link to it from a post here. You can’t upload an image directly to a post on SDMB and never could.
The thread with advice on posting images on the board is here:
Imgur also allows you to upload videos. I have uploaded one video of The Dragon’s Eye in action. I also uploaded a video of a samurai alarm clock that shouted in Japanese. Almost immediately, somebody commented with the translation I had been seeking.
I have a Flickr account as well and don’t have any issues using it. They let you store 1000 images for free. There are ads, but adblock takes care of them nicely. No problems linking images for posting here. I also have google photos but for some reason when I link from there the images don’t display fully in the post, you have to click on them to see the uncropped photo.
I think it was possible for a couple of days when we first switched to Discourse. That was before the admins discovered the toggle switch they’d overlooked, and turned it off. So it’s been off for all but ~2 days of the last ~5 years. Just as it was for the ~20 preceding years under vBulletin.
I post to another board that allows it. I discovered it by accident when I pasted what I thought was text in the editor. The previewer showed the the image I’d actually pasted which apparently uploaded from my clipboard in a flash. Pretty slick but I wouldn’t want to be the one keeping an eye on content and file size issues if it were (re?)enabled here.
