IIRC there was a time way back when that posters could post images. It went fine for a brief while. Then, content became a problem. I could go into details, but as it involves a person who no longer posts on the SDMB I prefer not to.
Sorry, a test didn’t work. I’ll keep trying… but not in this thread.
Since this was recently bumped…
I too use Flikr to host the photos I post here. As noted above, one can post 1000 images with the free account. I don’t like to take photos down in case someone wants to follow an old link. Is there any such limitation with imgur? Can one post as many photos as they want there on a free tier? Is there any size limitation to an individual photo?
There is an upload limit of 50 images per hour. There is no upload limit per account, so upload to your heart’s desire!
The maximum file size for non-animated images (think JPG, PNG, etc) is 50MB . PNG files over 5MB will be converted to JPEGs.
The maximum file size for animated images (like GIFs) and video is 200MB. Video uploads cannot be longer than 180 seconds. GIF and video files over 2MB will be converted to GIFVs
Imgur is the best free hosting site for this purpose, IMHO. Other than the limits mentioned above that no normal user would ever exceed, it’s one of the most liberal free services on the internet. The key thing to remember, once you’ve uploaded an image, is to right-click and select “display image in new tab” on your browser, and post that URL (ending in “.jpg”), not the first one. If you post the first one to SDMB you’ll get an “album view” thumbnail, which looks like a partial and distorted image.
I’ve been unable to grab a link to the Imgur photo via the app on my cell phone for at least a month or two now. No matter what I do, it only gives me the album URL. I have to go start up the computer in order to get the correct URL. I don’t want to delete the app, because it makes it much faster to upload photos. Does anyone else have this problem?
Yeah, Imgur just seems to get worse and worse about steering everything into their stories/social media thing. I use ImgBB now. Doesn’t even require a login.
Okay, I’m finally going to give it a try. Thanks!
We have a thread dedicated to using Imgur w Discourse. As with all threads about the technical, not administrative / moderation details, that one is in Site Feedback, not ATMB. This thread should have been started there, not here.
Here’s the SD on getting the image url from imgur.
And I have done so for ages. It’s just been recently that I can’t do it via the app on my phone, only via the website on my computer.
If you don’t log in, how do you access your uploaded photos?
And the post I cited has the workaround to be able to do the whole process on your phone even now. Yes, Imgur is actively trying to make it harder. I don’t use them, so I don’t know the details. But I know @Bullitt solved this problem just a week ago.
Try using his explanation and see what you find out.
Will do, thanks!
I just tested it this moment. I uploaded a photo from my library on my phone, it gave me a link, I followed the link and there’s my photo.
Of course it’s just the page with the photo on it as always, and you then have to select the photo on the page, copy it, and paste the photo into the address bar to get the URL for the photo itself. But that’s pretty normal for a mobile device. Here’s the photo uploaded from my Imgur app, just took a couple of minutes (most of which was the time to type out this post):
I’m on an iPhone with Safari, are you maybe using a different device/browser?
Yep. Won’t work on my Android. I’ve been following the instructions meticulously.
It might be an Android thing then, I’m sorry.
I’m just dropping images there to get the share link. I’m not using the site to maintain a catalog. Once I’ve pasted the link I’m done.
You can get the direct image URL from the website (mobile or desktop) but not from the Imgur app. I think the difference between you and @Atamasama is browser vs app, not Apple vs Android. But please correct me if I’m wrong, Atamasama.
I think it’s six of one, half a dozen of the other.
It could be that the app gives a different URL on a different platform, or it could be how the URL behaves on a different browser (maybe it does a redirect on one but not another). Or maybe both are happening?
I have an Android tablet, I could experiment and see what’s different from my phone.
Imgur changed their app in the last month. Before that I could get the URL to the image from the app, but since the change I have had no luck. It’s not a redirect issue; there’s just no way to get the URL. It still works fine from a browser.
If you figure out how to do it from the app, let us know.
