Japanese curry - Wikipedia ?

Usually you buy a packet of curry, heat it up, and pour it. I’m sure there’s a recipe to make the curry yourself, but I’m not sure whether that’s what you’re looking for as opposed to making some joke about anime?

I think you need to watch the Sailor Moon episode where Chibi-Usa tries to make curry. There are wacky teens, a busty monster-of-the-day called Droid Avocado, bizarre hair colors, and a supermarket that is temporarily overtaken by evil forces, but no robots, ninjas, samurai, or inappropriate sexual humor that I can remember - then again, I saw this episode dubbed. (Notice she washes the rice, which is recommended for short-grain Japanese rice, but not necessary for the long-grain rice usually sold in the States.)

If you wanted to make actual curry, I suggest looking in the Asian section of your local market, taking care to avoid the hot girl with weird hair handing out samples of Dark Fruit, and look for instant curry - I recommend Golden Curry or Vermont Curry. Check to make sure whether it’s mild, medium or hot, depending on your preferred level of spiciness, and follow the package directions. Serve over rice. I have a box of Golden Curry in my pantry which I will be making for my kid tonight.

That’s what lazy people like me do, sure. But most Japanese make it from roux.

I’m pretty sure a lot of Japanese people make it from a packet too.

For people who do make it from roux, it’s my understanding that there’s often not really a formal recipe. Although there certainly are a number of different recognized Japanese curries that involve particular ingredients, this dish is also a good way to use whatever meat and vegetables you happen to have in the kitchen.

Well, it’s a good way if you actually like Japanese curry. I like Indian and Thai curries just fine, but I’m not crazy about Japanese style curry.

I think the curry roux is what I’m looking for. Anybody got a recipe?

A web search would likely turn up something, but I’m not sure how reliable those recipes would be. Curry roux isn’t something that people usually (ever) make at home. I imagine you’d find it available to buy at any Asian supermarket (if you have access to such.)

You’re better off buying the block roux from a Japanese store. I don’t know if there are any homemade roux that come close to the taste, in my opinion. It’s quite different from any other curry.

If you want a tasty good Curry,

An Eggplant, a Tomato, and a Zucchini walk into a bar…

But seriously, take those ingredientrs and sautee with some garlic, add a goodly amount of Thai Prepared Massaman Curry Paste, pour in a can of coconut milk. Simmer for 15 minutes, serve with Sticky rice.

That might be a tasty curry, but it’s definitely not a Japanese curry.

So, you’re saying the Japanese can’t get eggplant, tomato, and zucchini? They have no access to coconut milk or packaged curries?

You walk over to the next block and go to Curry House … .

Japanese curry is a particular style of curry. It’s not just “something curry-flavored made in Japan”.

If they lived in a metro area they could probably get the ingredients and make it, but any Japanese would recognize it as Thai curry.

The flavor of Japanese curry is quite different.

I know, Japanese curry sucks almost as bad as American Curry… why do you think I gave a tasty good recipe?

Japanese, Thai, and Indian curries are all wonderful in their own way (though Japanese curry is the one more likely to be not good in my experience).

I’ve never heard of my mother-in-law making Japanese curry from scratch as she does for almost everything else.

One thing to note, it isn’t going to be as red as I’ve seen in anime. In reality it is brown.

Let’s put it this way, if you want to best replicate something the Japanese would recognize oh, let’s say eating and visiting in Thailand, massaman curry is the way to go for flavor. Of course, it won’t be red, as per Silver Tiger’s anime enchantment.

Ah, so you were threadshitting. How charming.

But the curry that the OP is talking about *isn’t *Thai curry. It’s the thick-curry-gravy-over-rice that the Japanese make at home. And that you can get in the United States at Curry House or Hurry Curry.

Some of the supermarkets near me stock House-brand curry, but I live in a neighborhood with a large Japanese population. It comes in little condensed cubes that you mix with water and heat up. I’ll defer to someone who’s actually lived in Japan, but I don’t think many modern Japanese people make their curry from scratch. They buy the premade stuff. So if you’re looking for the “authentic anime experience” you probably don’t want to make your own.

Here’s the websitefor House-brand curry. I find it particularly amusing that one of their brands is “Vermont Curry”.

Well, that you can get in a small part of California, in any case
(Damn, Japanese curry is expensive in the US!)

This thread makes me really want to have curry rice for dinner tonight…
