How can I share files with a friend of mine via the Internet?
I have tried several times to set up a an FTP site (I’m using Win XP Home…my port 21 is forwarded & I’m using dyndns) with Serv-U or Filezilla but it works for like one day then it crashes.
Is there any other way to share files other than emailing?
There are programs such as PCAnywhere and VNC that will let you connect your systems over the internet. Something of this type may be more feasible than FTP in your case
Nearly all IM (instant messenger) clients will allow you send or receive files through them. I use both Yahoo! and MSN Messenger; both have been generally problem-free when transferring files.
I think you select what gets transferred and don’t give him access to your computer. You could also theoretically put all your files/folders into a zip and send that.
I think PCAnywhere and VNC type things are bad idea, they give the user full access to the computer. The remote person might as well be sitting at the computer.
I haven’t looked at Foldershare for a while, but it looked like a good solution.
I don’t know why your ftp servers are crashing but I use Xp Home with Bulletproof (fnew name for G6) without any problems. The 30-day trial version should be good enough for you.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into foldershare. It seems promising.
Once again, the FTP site is working. I refreshed dyndns account for my dynamic IP and that seemed to do the trick. I hope that was the cause all along. Don’t really want to pay up for a static IP yet.
