How to Tell Speech Recognition It's Wrong

I have been playing with my Speech recognition program that is built into Vista. It is pretty cool but one thing, is there anyway to tell it, it’s wrong.

Specifically I say “Open XNView” which is a photo editor.

But the computer goes to “Ease of Access” I guess to the computer they sound alike.

I realize dictation and commands for programs are not the same, but anyway I went to a dictation and put in the word XNView, even recording the word, but I just can’t get Vista to recognize XNView.

Is it just a glitch or can you tell the speech recognition in Vista it’s wrong and don’t do that again

Does Vista allow for phonetics to be used? I recall the IBM dictation program I used for a 25 page term paper allowed for such specific input.

I don’t know the Vista speech recognition program specifically, but the ones I’ve worked with allowed you to train it to do specific things. You wouldn’t tell it it’s wrong so much as tell it “when I specifically say <this, which you record during training> do <this>”. Once you do that, it’s no longer dynamically interpreting what you’re saying but essentially executing a macro.

Again, I don’t know if Vista’s program lets you do that, but that might get you started on what to look for.

I don’t have Vista, so this is from other OS usage.

The speech recognition software that takes you through menus is trying to recognize words or phrases with a more generalized but smaller speech engine so a number of persons could use the same dictionary of voice patterns.

The speech recognition for dictation uses a larger dictionary and needs more training. It’s usually only good for a specific voice.

In XP you go to control panel and open speech to access the voice pronunciation stuff for text to speech. there may be a speech recognition path from there. When I had XP’s handicap accessibility options open there is a speech recognition that you can turn on there, so the path may be from there. I don’t have speech recognition running only the text to speech. I’m sure if you use the Vista help you can find how to train the recognition dictionary for the application. They all have a training function somewhere.

It does seem to like hard consonants.

“Fifty-five thorny thistles through the Firth of forth” seems to fuck with it somewhat.
