How to throw a party! - A 12-step MMP

Newbies are never an intrusion. Welcome and come back often.

There are no newbies - only mumpers we haven’t welcomed yet. So welcome, MM!

Yanno, we’re in a similar situation. We’ve got a house with good flow and a huge yard, but we never entertain. I think it’s mainly because we don’t have any friends or family nearby, and with the price of gas, no one wants to drive all the way out here to the boonies. Oh well…

Hah! I have a friend who does that when she gets high. (R, is that you?)

WhyNot, the cats have a sixth sense concerning any kind of sexual activity that goes on in the house. They always time it so they do something absolutely ridiculous right in the heat of things, which isn’t conducive to sex at all, unfortunately. And no sex in the wheeled car seats! It leads to bad things.

Welcome MM. What? Somebody had to do it!

Yeah, I’m in da cave. My sinuses hurt so I decided to just come back home and chill. Tonight is men’s night at my church but instead of havin’ it at the church, we are road trippin’ it to a member’s house and havin’ a fish fry in his honor. See, he’s in bad health and probably will not be with us much longer and lurves men’s night (which is usually steak night except for tonight when it will be fish fry night) but wouldn’t be able to make it out to the church tonight due to his health, so this got organized instead. Because we’re nice, dammit! Thus, instead of stayin’ at work all day with hurty sinuses and comin’ home to doctor up and sleep, Ima doctor up and sleep a bit this afternoon and go party tonight. Sometimes ya just gotta have priorities even if said priorities are not the proper grown up type priorities.

Ummm… Moooooom I wasn’t aware that folks actually had good experiences at Bob Evans. Or maybe it’s just me that has always managed to find bad Bob Evans’ to eat at. Course we don’t have such places 'round heah.

Happy day off, everybody who has the holiday, and commiseration to those who don’t. It’s ridiculously warm here, too, and I’ve got the house open, just like FCM. It was so warm this morning that Papa Tigs was able to take the Idiots out for a swim bright and early, instead of waiting till midafternoon like he’s been having to do lately even on warmer days. I wish spring would just arrive!

Great OP, Haze! Your parties sound like fun. I used to enjoy a good party; these days, I’m getting too old for as much craziness as I got into in my youth. I still remember the best party I ever threw, though. I was in college, and there was a wonderful grad student who we all adored who we discovered was 24 years old and had never had a birthday party in his entire life, let alone a surprise party. So we threw him the surprise party to end all surprise parties. A few of the guys who lived in this cavernous room in an old dorm (big enough to house about 20 people by today’s dorm room standards) hosted it, and we sent the one guy who was over 21 out on a booze run, it being Ohio and booze only being available in state stores, and somehow the evening was perfect from start to finish. Our birthday boy cried, he was so thrilled; everybody had enough to drink but not too much, nobody got stupid and annoying, and I was beyond delighted at the success of the event. I’ve never quite done as well since – not that I’ve tried that hard; once you achieve perfection, it’s hard to top it!

The promotion party we went to last night turned out to be as I’d feared – lots of nice people, but in a little restaurant/bar space that was far too small for the number of people there, and the music was far too loud to be able to talk to anybody. Plus the only people Papa Tigs knew well were at a table where there was no way on earth we could squeeze any more chairs around it, so we couldn’t even visit with people he knew. So we greeted our host, congratulated him, put in an obligatory hour trying to visit with a few people, and then left. Most folks were only sticking around about an hour, so he must have invited a million people to have that steady a flow all evening to keep the place packed!

One thing that shocked us both, though, was the neighborhood the party was held in. It’s off the U Street Metro station, for those who know D.C. That used to be a neighborhood that we would not want be wandering around in at night, or probably during the day, either. Now it’s a Happening Place, lots of nice shops and restaurants and people out and about having a good, crime-free time – it was quite a pleasant surprise to both of us. Neighborhoods in a city do change, don’t they, though?

Back to enjoying our lovely day and all the wonderful fresh air!

Yeah, ours jumped on the bed and meowed insistently and repeatedly this weekend right while we were in the middle of things. Ugh. It’s a good thing she’s cute.

Great OP Haze! Brings back so many memories.

Back before I married Jim, I used to host parties a lot. They were usually stress free, with just a bunch of munchy type foods, once in a while I would go all out and prepare a nice meal.
The best/worst parties I ever had were when I lived in an apartment right in the middle of a small town above a tax service. It was good to be centrally located, it was bad that everyone in town knew what was going on at my apartment.
Some of the best- Roof access, better drinking among the stars, drunken flashing cars driving by, random people stopping by, the grocery store across the street, business’ in the area closing down at 5, no neighbors!
Worst? Someone peeing on my new VCR thinking it was the bathroom, someone leaning on the sill to pee in the bathroom, knocking it loose, breaking a window with my boobs flashing friends across the street in the winter, paying for the above things.

The good times outweigh the bad ones though, and at least in part, some of the bad are at least a bit funny to me now.
Jim thinks we are going to entertain a lot when we get the new house. I’m all for the holidays, and a few more here and there, but I don’t think he realizes how much work goes into it, and he wouldn’t anyhow, that would be my job. He’s never done any entertaining at all, just went to parties, and sure, to a guest they’re a ton of fun, and don’t get me wrong, I love to have them as well. He’ll find out more when we have the housewarming party in June.

On another note, I finally finished my Swiffer cloth! Links to the finished product:

I’m very happy with it!
I’m currently trying to finish up a scarf for my mother, very similar to the one I made for my step mother. I did finish the two wash cloths for her this weekend. Hopefully I’ll have those done tomorrow.

Happy Monday everyone!!

Four hours of sleep. Doctor appointment. Big lunch.

Nap time.
Oh, and I don’t use Tylenol, the stuff doesn’t work for me. I may as well be popping M & M’s for all the good it does me.

I’m an aspirin/ibuprofen guy.

Since my name doesn’t start with R (nor does it contain any Rs), this leads us to two conclusions:

  1. Nope, not me.
  2. Omigod, there’s TWO of us? I suggest you never put us in the same room, if that’s the case (good thing I’m on the wrong side of the border)

Nice OP, Hazel. Your parties remind me of the parties I used to go (and hostess) back in the day. Except I never made dumplings–I “made” more munchies than actual food. I do miss those times (sometimes) but now that 2 drinks can put me away, I’m in no shape to do the party circuit. Never thought about a laser pointer, though–that would have entertained most of my friends, without the cats!

Don’t forget ashtrays and don’t knock over the bong!

I am waiting for dorky fridge guy to call (the odds aren’t good that he’ll call now) and waiting for class to start. I spent 6+ hours watching the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice last night. Mmmmm. Nice.

I have an extremely busy week coming up-why, God, why? I have library, cultural sensitivity training, work, work, Daughter’s best friend coming in from Boston for 4 days, bridal shower present to buy, bridal shower to go to, baby presents X2 to buy, lunch out with Daughter and Best Friend. Oh, and homework etc.
I’m going to say this one more time: I’m here to look decorative. I am NOT here to run around and be busy. Please make a note of it. Thank you.

Great OP Haze - Your parties sound like a blast.

I don’t post in MMP’s much, but I just wanted to say hi.

2nd on 2!

Woo-hoo!

Dishes are done. I got tired of waiting for my daughter to do them. It was driving me insane.

One load of laundry washed and put in the dryer.

I need to vacuum and dust and sanitze the counters. I don’t know if I’ll get to the vacuuming and dusting part. I cannot stop shaking so doing the dishes was a real adventure.

I have to report for jury duty tomorrow. I thought that since my group number was relatively high I wouldn’t have to go. Alas, that is not the case. It seems they’re starting with the middle groups tomorrow (of which I’m a part).

I need to buy some groceries, but just don’t feel like going.

Oh, 10 pounds lost. Another five or ten and I’ll be in my skinnier clothes again.

Well, spring is over. We hovered over 70 for a few hours, and with the windows open, the house got up to 69 in the hall, so I was impressed. But just a few minutes ago, I heard the wind just a’howlin’ and when I looked at the thermometer outside the dining room, it had plummeted about 8 degrees in an hour, so I feel safe in saying the cold front is here. Forecast is for freezing temps by morning.

Laundry is done. We picked up a couple of steaks earlier, so that’ll be dinner. Speaking of dinner, guess I should feed the critters.

Oh, rats, and I need to get some bills paid. I’ve been meaning to do that since Friday. I need to get the checks written tonight so I can drop them at the post office on my way out tomorrow. Well, off I go…

 I’m glad I’m in da cave right now. A friend of mine called a bit ago and said she was comin’ over to bring me sump’n. Sump’n turned out to be chocolate covered academia nuts three big boxes even. She said it was a thank you for the wunnerful gumbo Sattiday night. Ain’t it good to have nice friends!

Wow. I didn’t know Crazy Professors went in for being covered in chocolate! :stuck_out_tongue:

You have NO IDEA. Isn’t that right, Prof. Rapunzel?

Heya meeks. Drop by anytime - we don’t bite unless you’re into that sorta thing.

You two care to demonstrate?

For a moment, I thought we got **Mika **back and I missed her post. Not to be… :frowning:
(welcome, meek! Not your fault I misread the above :))

Brief nap taken.

Must eat something.

It is Short Post Day.

There is this woman in my class who is such a–what’s a cross between a dork and a jerk, a jork? or a derk? She posted a link to New Kids on the Block (no real relevance to the convo going on at the time) and then she starts to rant IN CLASS about how people who shop at bookstores are jerks!
I ask you–what to do? I sooo long to smack her down. Oh, and upon occasion she types this type of thing (in a graduate class, mind you): I c.a.n.'t s.t.a.n.d i.t.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to read that shit? W.h.y does she d.o that?

Is it L33T? what?
argh.

Fridge man is here. yippee.
