How to treat a near constant heat-rash...

Welcome to my most intimate post to date. I’ve been living in Taiwan for the last year, and for those of you not familiar with the island, there is no winter and the summer is hotter and more humid than any I’ve ever experienced (and I come from a place that’s pretty hot and humid). Add to that that I’m very hot-natured and I could sweat in a snow storm and that I’m hairy, I have all of the elements for a mean heat rash, and for the last month or so it’s been near constant.

It hasn’t been bad, because as soon as it starts, I use an ointment that the ladyfriend gave me (no idea what it is) and it goes away. Yet, this time it’s not.

Also, when I don’t have a rash, I use the hairdryer after my shower to dry down under, thoroughly, and I put baby power all around.

I also sleep naked and I try to wear shorts as much as possible (though, I have to wear pants to work).

What do I need to be doing? Any dermatologists in the house?

Gold Bond Medicated Powder is what I use, and it works.

Rules of Dermatology:

If it’s wet, dry it.

If it’s dry, wet it.

If you’re on steroids, get off.

If you’re not on steroids, get on.

If you don’t know what it is, don’t touch it.

If you know what it is, there’s no need to touch it.

Don’t scratch.

Yes, I like Gold Bond powder a lot, as well. You might also try a diaper ointment - seriously, heat rash is essentially the same thing as diaper rash. Burt’s Bees makes the best diaper ointment ever made, with not only zinc oxide, but a bunch of healing herbal stuff as well, but I rather doubt it’s available over there. I use it on my daughter’s diaper rash and my own heat rash, and it’s amazing how quickly it relieves the pain (like, instantly!) and how soon it heals the rash.

If that’s not working, you might have a yeast infection, and can try an anti-fungal designed for athlete’s foot, or a Monistat creme type product made for treating women’s yeast infections. (Read the label - the vaginal suppository type will do you no good.)

There’s these wierd dudes, they wear white coats and funny rubber thingees in their ears, sometimes you call them “Doc”? See one.

Baby powder is for babies. Get some adult dude stuff for down there. Sheesh.

I have the dude stuff. I also have a bad habit of calling the dude stuff baby stuff.

About those men in white coats, they often don’t wear white coats here in Taiwan, and I’ve had enough run-ins with them to only go to them when I absolutely have too. Better be damn sure I’m not going to go in just for a heat rash. I’ll live with it, unless it starts to look like things are going to start falling off.

I saw your post title and immediatly thought “Gold Bond Medicated Powder” .

Others have suggested it, so seconded, thirded, or fourthded.

If you can’t get the Burt’s Bees stuff, can you get Desitin Creamy? It’s Desitin (mom’s diaper rash ointment of choice) with Aloe and Vitamin E to promote healing. Lubes up your scratchy parts like nobody’s business, and you glide through the day!

Gold Bond is fine stuff for a minor problem or preventing problems, but it has no real “medicine” in it. Better stuff actually has an anti-fungal ingrediant like Tolfanate.

One more item to suggest Bag Balm. I’m not too sure what is in it other than enough lanolin to keep Hal Briston happy as can be, but it works. I did a 7 day bike tour and by Tuesday I was so sore and raw that it took almost 5 minutes for me to get onto my saddle. One of the other riders told me about Bag Balm. I went and got some at a drug store. The next morning I was healed.
Wonderful stuff Bag Balm.

I’m going to go a different route and suggest that you eschew the trappings of clothes.
