I quit Netflix, but might go back to see the last season of Dexter. Was it any good? Anyone know when it comes out on DVD? It usually takes a while.
It was…ok. I like Colin Hanks but he wasn’t that good as a bad guy. Edward James Olmos was really misused in his role. Dexter’s kills without getting caught becomes increasingly improbable. And there’s a realization Deb comes to near the end that is bizzare and just completely unnecessary.
That’s the non spoilered version.
We were impatient and subscribed to Showtime long enough to watch the season On Demand. It was OK, but there were too many irritatingly stupid things that were just wrong. I’m feeling like the writers are either getting lazy or are just burned out. Honestly, I’m not even looking forward to the next season.
The past season comes out on DVD roughly around the time the new season comes to TV. It premieres September 30. IME the past DVDs come out in August in Region 1.
It was so bad it made previous seasons seem retroactively worse.
Very weak season I think.
The final scene in the season is the only one that makes it worth it - and should make thngs ‘interesting’ - if the writers can handle it.
A very weak season. I agree with Enderw24 regarding both Colin Hanks, Edward James Olmos, and the Deb realization. There is also a plot development that is rather easy to guess several episodes before it occurs–to the point that you’ll be insulted by its obviousness.
It’s not unwatchable yet, but based on how positively I felt about this series in Season 1 it has fallen a long way.
The last two seasons have had the weakest villains, the weakest side stories, and the weakest performance by Dexter all rolled into one.
In the first season any stupid mistake by Dexter was extremely rare, and almost presented as "shocking "that Dexter could even make a mistake.
Now, Dexter deliberately does extremely stupid things multiple times in every single episode. He takes risks Season 1 and even Season 2/3 Dexter never would have taken in a million years. He gets saved by contrived scenarios and sheer luck over and over again and that makes the whole thing less enjoyable. That combined with really pointless side stories and an ensemble cast where probably 4 characters are totally superfluous is leading to the show just being genuinely bad.
Definitely the weakest season so far. It’s still very watchable, just not on the level of past seasons.
But Deb does still cry in almost every scene. So there’s that.
Seems like the show is running into the same problem as 24. After a while, things just become stale, so to jolt the audience, they try throwing in ever increasing, over-the-top developments.
That said, it’s still worth it, and there’s a development that hints at what’s to come next season, which could prove interesting.
